Help!
I need to make my sons birthday cake...hadn't planned to, but the lady I asked to make it is on holiday!
Anyway, it's going to be a how to train your dragon 2 themed party and cake.
I have got a dragon cake topper from e bay and have seen the sort of cake I want to make, however what's stumping me is the decoration on the sides.
I would like to put marzipan Viking shields all the way round the sides of the cake....hope you are still with me so far! :)
How on earth would I do that!?
Can you even get grey marzipan? And how would I decorate them?
Any help gratefully received....

you can buy coloured ready roll icing, that would work. assuming the cake has fondant over the sides and top you could just wet the back sides of the fondant sheilds and stick them on!

Fondant?
What is that!?
I was going to use ready roll icing on the cake then stick the shields on somehow?

Fondant/sugarpaste is ready-roll icing. If you brush it lightly with water it will go sticky and you can stick other bits of fondant (like the shields) on to it. You can buy ready coloured, but grey isn't that easy to find unless you have a cake decorating supplies shop nearby - your best bet would probably be to get some pre-coloured black and knead a little bit of that into some white.

Oh lord.
Thank you.
I am very worried about this! :)

Firstly - how old is your son?
Fondant icing is probably more palatable than marzipan (plus, if you're having a party, some children may have nut allergies, so icing would still be preferable, and, IMO, easier to work with)
Just buy some black food colouring - you can work it easily from shades of grey to black with either fondant icing or marzipan (just start off with the tiniest drip into your icing, then work up from there until you reach your desired colour).

Don't get me wrong - I'm absolutely no cake-maker. I made a Peter Pan themed cake for my son's third birthday. Made the cake to look like a galleon, used wafers and chocolate fingers and string accordingly. Modelled the croc out of fondant icing, but his mouth wouldn't say open, so I propped it up with a cocktail stick. Forgot the stick was in there when son ate said croc - Oooofff. Could have been very nasty.

Don't fret about it too much - your son will appreciate your home-made efforts. No matter how pitiful mine have been for my children, they have always been the ones that have been remembered. (In a good way - I hope) Grin

You can either use blobs of wet icing to stick your shields on to the side of the cake, or you can buy cake glue from specialist shops (or online).

One thing I might suggest for the shields - make a card stencil, then use it for all your shields, rather than try to cut out each shield individually. Not trying to be obsequious, but if, as you say you haven't a clue, that is exactly how I learned little things, by doing daft stuff and wishing I'd been a bit more sensible. Blush

He will be 6 :)
I thought I could use an egg cup or something to cut our the shield shapes?
That's a good point about marzipan - I have checked online and hobbycraft do ready roll icing in grey!
