Newbie Knitter Question

dylansluckymum · 18/09/2006 10:35

i've just started to teach myself knitting from a book (with a little help from google videos) and i have a question - when it says to cast on however many stitches, do you count the slip knot in that or is it the slip knot PLUS the number it says to cast on???

I count the slip knot!
There are lots of keen knitters on here dylansluckymum, enjoy your new hobby but don't let it become an obsession...

dylansluckymum · 18/09/2006 10:59

i think it's a bit late... i spent so much time yesterday that i was feeling naseous from concentrating so hard! then this morning i was looking forward to ds going down for his nap so i could do a few more rows!

Yes, count the slip knot as Marina says. You are on a slippery slope here....

NotQuiteCockney · 18/09/2006 11:10

(OT: I've been removing the slip knot, or starting with more of a yo sort of thing, so the knot isn't visible ... hmm, think I am straying into dangerously obsessive territory here.)

Got more blanket sewing up done, hope to post it this week. Made more progress on the other blanket I'm doing, working on the border on a big circular atm.

Marina · 18/09/2006 11:11

Tamum I did a mahoosive order from Texere yesterday, you temptress you!
Am hoping to be up your way for New Year this year btw

Marina · 18/09/2006 11:11

Am almost done with my chunk NQC and will be posting to bundy at work too.

tamum · 18/09/2006 11:17

If it's any comfort Marina I ordered a load of stuff from Elann yesterday- it would have been an immense bargain if I'd been in Canada I'm going to knit this in dark red. Meanwhile I am knitting dolls' clothes, as dd has been going through my patterns and saying "ah, now this tickles my fancy", so I just haven't got the heart to say no I really, really want to get on with my Noro jaclet and my Kaalund shawl

It would be lovely to see you if you have time this year

Marina · 18/09/2006 11:38

my next proj is an "Evacuation" hairy boy's slipover for one of Scummy's boys, by request
Love that cardy, but why not the Extreme Cruelty skirty thing tamum? Just the job for wafting round the lab surely
Now I've signed up for Knitty as well, thanks to you! And Fio has got me shredding plastic bags, dh thinks I've gone nuts.
Still want to join the knitters Dylansluckymum?

NotQuiteCockney · 18/09/2006 11:51

I'm feeling an urge to start making Xmas ornaments. Maybe felted? Must fiddle .... Very bad.

tamum · 18/09/2006 11:58

That skirt is just so me, isn't it Marina? What is an Evacuation slipover?

Felted sounds good, NQC.

Felt him a straitjacket Fio
Tamum, it's a 40s Fair Isle slipover as worn by one of the "evacuee" participants in a recent CBBC reality show for children.
Really very good show, most thought-provoking, and a retro-knitter's paradise gallery. All the girls and boys were in gorgeous cardies or slipovers!

NotQuiteCockney · 18/09/2006 12:13

Fio, what have you been felting?

I have not started felting, but my albatross is merino 4-ply which should be good for felting. Am tempted to do some mosaic work and felt it ...

you have a real gift Fio. That is beautiful.

tamum · 18/09/2006 12:22

The series (and the tank top) sounds great, Marina. I used to do lots of fairisle but haven't done any for ages.

Fio you are just so talented

NotQuiteCockney · 18/09/2006 12:37

That's gorgeous, fio. How did you get the mixed colours? (And what are you doing with all these felted flowers? Are your children covered with felted things too?)

OOO lovely...would love to have a go at felting...feeling the desire to get knitting again. Hopefully I will have the time to soon!!

I was thinking about finding out about what classes I could do in the day while kiddies are at school. FGS..how impatient am I Amelia only started half days today...

ilovedolly · 19/09/2006 22:45

about knitting obsession - Um I just resumed knitting (after 15 yr break) and have just been at it solidly for a week. dd sitting on her playmat staring at crazy knitting mummy. Where can I get funky baby knitting patterns? I really want to make a dress, not too complicated..... Alternatively a cure for knitting mania?

Whizzz · 20/09/2006 16:56

I've just started too - but at the moment am sticking with the basics - scarves made with fluffy eyelash wool. Everyone will have one for Xmas !!

themoon66 · 20/09/2006 17:30

I haven't knitted for about 20 years... and I just spotted this thread!! Now my fingers are itching to start again.... its an addiction that never goes away I guess.

themoon66 · 20/09/2006 17:31

Oops... meant to say - yes, count the first loop-slip stitch thingy (in reply to OP)
