Crochet hooks - beginner needs help!

I'm off to hobby craft tomorrow as I've decided I want to give crochet a try.
But the crochet hooks come in loads of sizes and I don't know what to choose! I was planning on getting a light coloured bog standard ball of cheap wool to learn with but the different hook sizes has thrown me, what do I choose?!

It depends on the wool and how tightly you crochet (called 'tension'), but you don't know that yet. The thicker the hook the easier it is to crochet so I'd start with maybe 7 or 8 mm hook. Then when you master that you can drop down to 4 or 5mm. Many instructions for things like blankets specify 4mm so that is a good one to have. You'd use a thicker hook for chunky wool (a scarf for example).
Happy crocheting, hope you enjoy it!

Look on the packet of yarn you choose. It should tell you what size hook (or knitting needles) you'd usually use with it. If you're a beginner, you might want to choose the next size up as that makes it a bit easier to see your stitches when you first start.

If your hobby craft branch is anything like mine, you'll then find yourself looking at a dreadfully selection of crochet hooks and plumping for whatever is the best fit.

Hiya .. I own a yarn shop and teach crochet so have a bit of knowledge :D go for a 4mm hook and a double knit (dk) yarn to start ,preferably cotton, as it's easier to see your stitches . On the whole, The hook size is determined by the yarn, with 4ply needing a 3.25mm, an Aran a 5mm and a chunky a 6mm up.. But this does vary depending on whether you want a lacy effect or a solid fabric.
Pick up a copy of simply crochet as if has clear uk instructions on how to crochet..good luck :)
