Can I use quilting fabric to make clothes?

What's the difference between quilting cotton and dress-making cotton? Is there any? Would only be clothes for DD but I much prefer the patterns on the fabric advertised as "for quilting ".

I've used quilting fabric for clothes, it's fine. You could use interfacing if you need to make it heavier, for skirts etc.

Orangeanddemons · 29/07/2014 11:31

There's no difference.

you could use interfacing that's probably a bit beyond my skills!!! But thank you very much for the answers. I didn't think there seemed to be a difference but didn't want to make a beginners error!!!

Works fine. Doesn't need interfacing, except in the usual places.

It's generally better quality than dress making cotton and thicker.

It's also, usually more expensive. Generally I've only made clothes out of quilting fabric because I've totally fallen for the fabric. A blouse/skirt from M&S is a lot cheaper.

Yes, it is very expensive! But worth it when you find good prints. John Lewis have a sale on some lovely fabrics at the moment.

I agree that the prints are often much nicer on quilting cottons. I have used them - the only downside is the price.

It wrinkles like the dickens and hangs quite stiffly though that depends on the fabric manufacturer. I prefer a good poplin or lawn, myself, but it does depend on what you're making.

Yes it is stiff, tight weve and lots of dressing because it's designed to be cut with a roller cutter into squares and stay square. It doesn't lend it's self to anything drappy.

Thank you all. At the moment, cushion covers are my limit(!) so if I achieve anything vaguely wearable it will be something of a miracle!!!
