Vintage & Retro Fabric recommendations

Can anyone recommend any good online fabric shops that sell vintage and retro fabrics for soft furnishings i.e. cushions etc.
Must be good quality but not extortionate in price. I've used Ebay but had fingers burnt a little bit.

Hancocks of Paducah have a good range at reasonable prices, but obviously it has to be posted from the States which will add to the cost. I've never used them for furnishing fabric but I've used them a lot for quilting fabric and they're very reliable. You might be unlucky and have to pay VAT when the parcel arrives, so make allowances for that when you're pricing. I find that I have about a 1 in 6 chance of being charged.

there are some good places round us (sadly not online, I know) but that's Bath/Somerset. In particular, there's a big antiques fair every few months where 4 or 5 stalls do a good range of stuff at not entirely extortionate prices.

I've used an Ebay shop that sells some nice 50s-style stuff without any problem Little Shop of Treasures - admittedly, not a huge amount, but what I've ordered has always arrived promptly and I've been pleased with it. What kind of vintage were you looking for?

By the way, twocats, I'm not far from Bath ? where would you recommend in that neck of the woods?

I'm a junk shop scourer too.Have made quilts entirely from old teatowels pillow cases and boxer shorts (although latter belonged to dh!)

Did babyonboard not get her lovely fabric from Brick Lane market? Is that any good, tilly?

Also, what I do is to buy lovely skirts etc from charity shops/jumble sales, and cut them up. Or sheets. If you're doing cushions etc you can get a lot that way. I do like the patchwork look though.

Frieda - there's a vintage clothes shop just off Milsom Street in Bath which often has lace and sometimes has fabrics - can't remember what it's called, but it's just up from Waterstones on a little alley on the other side of the road.

But the best bet is the antiques fair at the Bath and West Showground - it's a bit random as to who's there, but over the summer there have been several nice stalls (in the tents which are up ahead to the left as you come in) which have vintage fabrics and things made out of them (including deckchairs re-upholstered in chintz for £25!). I think quite a few people are importing stuff from France. There's another one next weekend - 23rd/24th. The fleamarkets there, however, are utter depressing tat in the main.
