Sewing clothes - adapting a pattern?

I would like to make a dress for a wedding I'm attending but I'm not sure how to go about adapting a pattern for my size/shape. (I've made clothes in the past but they've always been a bit make it up as you go along). Does anyone have a link to good sites/books that explain a bit about this?

I recall reading a blog some years ago that talked about how to adapt patterns for larger chest sizes but of course I can't find it now.

If it's adjusting for a larger bust you'll need a full bust adjustment. There are lots of tutorials online. I tend to flick through them all until I find one that matches most closely the pattern that I'm using.

It was very successful considering I'm a newbie sewer and it was my first ever bust adjustment.

I made a practice bodice with 6 sections, 2x back, 2x sides and 2x front, so i could adjust it wherever I needed to, which was helpful as the front was looser on the area above my bust by just a bit more than I'd like so i took that in more and marked the change on they adjusted pattern I made. When i make the final version I'll cut the front panel on the fold of the fabric so it's one piece, but I now know to angle it slightly to reduce the fabric on my upper bust area.

Definitely make up a test toile dress first in something cheap like an old sheet. Then you can see how the alterations have worked before you touch your real fabric
