Just starting a thread for all folk who are into photography - whether you are a happy snapper wanting to improve, a serious shooter, or somewhere in between.

Lets chat on here, share tips, techniques, dilemmas, ideas, show our photos if we want to, discuss cameras and equipment, support and encourage each other.....or just chat whatever photography related chat you might feel like! Smile

FBX, I forgot about that. I'll ask for it to be moved - where would it be best for if to be moved to?

Bruffin, I love your DH's steampunk photos! Fabulous!

eurochick · 23/05/2014 11:25

Great to see the new thread up and running! I hope we can have it somewhere we won't lose it after 90 days.

Selks · 23/05/2014 11:32

I've asked MNHQ to move it to somewhere more appropriate Smile

Hello I'd love to join! My degree is in photography and I worked as a photographer up until I had my son, now I take all my photos on my phone and only of ds Blush

Selks · 23/05/2014 11:37

Love those shots, Gerund. The deer one is adorable. Did you use a tripod for the bee one? Impressive.

Funkyboldribena, those are very interesting photos! I'm off to google 'cyanotype'.

Bruffin, your DH has talent.

Loving all the contributions on here. It would be great also if people wanted to comment on HOW they got the shots too, that would be very informative.

Still continuing to get my head round my new camera today, in between trying to get some work done.

Hi Ikea! Welcome Smile. Maybe we can prompt you to get back into photography as a 'thing' again. What kind of photography did you do when you were a working photographer?

OP posts:
ikeaismylocal · 23/05/2014 11:41

I worked as a family photography in studios in the UK and Australia. I really really loved it but I don't think it's a comparable career with have small children :( I would like to start photographing with my proper camera more often!

Selks · 23/05/2014 11:43

That cyanotype process is fascinating, if complicated. Just had a read online. Do you do it the old school way, Funky, with mixing chemicals etc?

Just popping over to be nosey! I would love to buy a decent camera and get into photography, I really enjoy taking pictures but I wouldn't know where to start with buying a decent first time camera :)

I would love some advice please on what would be good to start with.

Selks · 23/05/2014 11:47

Well Ikea, on my previous thread (see second post above) there was a suggestion of starting a monthly (or whenever) photography topic thread, choosing a topic to photograph each month and submitting the photos, that thread hasn't started yet but if it does that might be a way to get back into it.

Selks · 23/05/2014 11:48

Cats, welcome, and do check out my original thread which is linked to in the second post on here, I got loads of good advice when buying my camera the other day Smile

Thank You, I shall pop over and have a read!

I was a keen amateur, but then had a baby and don't really have the time anymore (DD is 18 months old now). Maybe this will spur me into digging it out again and getting some decent shots again. It has certainly spurred me into re-registering on here as I'm a lurker rather than poster mainly anyway.

Prior to DD I really enjoyed landscapes and wildlife. I have also done three weddings for family so do some portrait stuff too.

GerundTheBehemoth · 23/05/2014 12:30

Selks, no tripod, I never use one though I really should. The bee was working its way around the phlox flowers so I pre-focused on one flower and took a volley of shots when the bee came down to it, which luckily happened before my arms gave way under the considerable weight of camera + lens. I'm sure I'd have got more and better shots if I'd used a tripod, but I hate carrying round loads of gear.

I'm loving all the photos posted so far - more please!

WhatsItAllAbout123 · 23/05/2014 12:42

Ok, I have had to turn my laptop on and don't have any decent photos on here, so will have to put on some links:

I have some pretty decent, though dated kit. I use a Cannon 40D, Tamron 28-75 f2.8, Tamron 70-200 f2.8, Canon 50mm f1.8, Canon 10-22mm, plus I have three flash guns, light stands, umbrellas and a reflector (bought for wedding No.2 just in case I needed them, didn't need them for that wedding, but were a godsend for wedding No.3). I also have an old Canon film camera (no idea on the model) which the leopard was shot with. For the weddings I have also borrowed my Dads Canon 400D to use as a second camera and had the film camera as back up just in case.

eurochick · 23/05/2014 12:50

Wow, those wildlife and landscape shots are amazing!

I'm at work and only have a handful of photos on this computer but here are a few I took on our honeymoon.

Thanks Selks and Spider
Before i met Dh i was into photography pre dslr days. I had an Olympus OM10 but was having problems with the shutter and photos were coming out blurred. I asked in a few photography shops and I was dismissed because i was a girl and told I must be taken them wrong. I new it wasn't me, then unfortunately all my camera equipment got stolen and I couldn't afford to replace it.

As i mentioned on the other thread we have a D80, 3000 and now the D600 and dh has just spent a fortune on a new lens, I might have a go while dh is doing his photography.
Love your portrait Whatsitallabout, and the Bee Gerund

WhatsItAllAbout123 · 23/05/2014 13:33

Thanks. They were all taken when I could get out and about around sunrise and sunset and had the luxury of being able to sit and wait! Now I have a mini me shadow attached to my side at all times, and she wants to help me too, so it is very difficult now to do anything.

Bruffin, I know what you mean about being dismissed due to being a girl. I am a member of some forums (though rarely go on them now.) They are all very male dominated and I have found some of them to be gear freaks to the point they are completely dismissive of any lenses that are not the Canon L range. It is funny though as the vast majority of their opinions are hear say, rather than from experience. My tamron lenses have slower auto focus, so are usually completely dismissed by the gear snobs, but I have never missed a shot with either of them.

I did a photography night school class years ago and I was the only girl on the course, the blokes were great with me though. I was 17 at the time, everyone else were 35 - 70, but the class teacher was fab and it was a very inclusive environment irrespective of your ability / kit / age / sex etc, which helped everyone feel safe to properly critique each other's work. It is very difficult to give constructive critique while you are learning, but it is such a great way to learn, once you get over the feeling like it is a personal attack! It is funny only one of the forums I'm on did you receive proper critique for every photo posted, the other forums would merely pat you on the back for your shot, even if there were obvious flaws in the shot.

Sallystyle · 23/05/2014 13:55

Great photos everyone.

I have a couple of my husband in my profile as well.

bruffin · 23/05/2014 13:59

Whatsitallabout123

I have since found out it was a known fault with the OM10, there are even threads about it now on the internet 25+ years laterShock and how to fix it yourself.

WhatsItAllAbout123 · 23/05/2014 14:19

Wow, that makes it even worse Bruffin.

WhatsItAllAbout123 · 23/05/2014 14:20

Fab photos U2!

Selks · 23/05/2014 18:47

Whatsit, fab shots, I like your landscapes particularly...lovely lighting in them and you've got the sense of scale....any tips for getting landscape shots as good as those?
