Matching fabric patterns

The sewing machine has been idle for quite a while but now I have found some material that I would like to use for a summer dress.

The Sewing Bee has got me worried, should I match the pattern. All of my RTW clothes don't seem to for summer wear.

If I was sewing a jacket etc with expensive material, I would try to match the check.

WWYD?

I always match checks, stripes etc, but i was taught to pattern cut at college by a Couturier.

The reason RTW garments tend not to, is because matching is costly fabric wise, i.e there's quite a bit of wastage.

Depends entirely on how professional you want your garment to look, and how much fabric you have..

Happy sewing! Smile

The dress I hope to make has three panels on the front. Should I choose a different (dress) pattern for this material?

How do you pattern match on the bodice for a three panel dress pattern?

I have plenty of fabric but can't envisage how to do the 3D on the bust. Does that make sense.......

Start with the Centre Front placed on your fabric so that the edges of the pattern piece sit in the same place on the left and right. Then use those edges to dictate the match for the left and right bodice pattern pieces... does that make sense?
Let the CF lead the way. As long as its symmetrical on both sides (including the side seams) you're ok.
Its a bit tricky for me to say if you need a different fabric without seeing it, as long as the pattern repeat isn't too wide you should be fine. Smile

Thanks Jellykat, It makes total sense. It sounds so obvious now that you have mentioned CF!
I was inventing rather convoluted methods in my head (due to the three panels). Blush
The material will be fine, now the penny has dropped :)

Glad to have helped, happy sewing!

While I was mulling this over, I cut out my second Grainline Moss skirt.

It's sometimes nice to sew something you've done before. I'm adding at least 12cm to the length though. I wore my first version, in Italy, with black tights.(In colder weather). My DH noticed the reaction. I didn't.
Nobody would have batted an eye in England.
