Attic24 Granny Stripe Help Please!

This is my first chrochet project. I am fine with the pattern and have made a sample, but there is one bit I just don't understand and would really appreciate if someone who has made this blanket could explain to me or find a video clip I could watch that shows the technique.

At the end of row 3 it says - fasten off (DOES THIS MEAN CUT THE YARN AND KNOT IT?)

Then row 4 says - Tie in your new colour... knot the two yarns tightly together, leaving ends to darn in after (WHERE?). To begin, insert the hook through the very first space of the previous row (between the last tr and the previous tr cluster) (NOT SURE WHERE?). Draw the new yarn colour through to the front, ch 3, then 1 tr into the same space.

I just cant visualise it. I have searched youtube for granny stripe blankets but people give other techniques. I used VeryPinkKnits video on how to change colour on her ripple blanket, but now my blanket edge is indented from the previous rows IFSWIM.

Im loving the pattern, but cant live with a wonky edge (seeing as the other edge is fine!). I wish Lucy would make a video, I am such as visual learner!! I don't know a single soul who chrochets so Im really stuck.

Sorry for the bits in capitals, I don't know how to make the text change colour or font so you can see what I don't understand.

Can anyone help please?

TIA

A the end of row three cut your yarn leaving about 4 inches (longer is fine) and draw through the loop on your hook - pull tight and fasten off. You should have no loops on your hook.

I don't knot in the next colour - just because my mum taught me not too. I join in by taking the next colour and folding a loop about 6 inches from the end. Insert your hook through the top loop of the last stitch that you worked (assuming you are right handed you will have the hook in your right hand and the strip of crochet stretching out to your left). Pull the loop of your new wool through the loop. You will have on loop over your hook but your yarn will be double thickness (the 6 inch tail plus the main part of the yarn). I work the first two stitches of my 3chain with double yarn and then drop the short bit. Make the last chain stitch with just the long bit of yarn and continue as normal.

When you have finished your project you will have a number of "tails" from the start and finish of each colour. You need to darn these in using a wool needle. Just sew a couple of stitches neatly into the first treble of each row and cut the yarn close to the work.

If you don't understand my rather Woolly Grin description I can put some photos on this thread to see if that helps.

for changing colours, I do what WoolybacksWife has said for finishing off, but I weave the loose end in and out of the last few stitches there and then...I loathe threading up all the farking loose ends afterwards!!

for starting a colour I put the hook through and take a loop back , then I weave the loose end through the first set of chain, and then crochet over it on the next row.

Id do whats been said already

Hi Woolly, you have helped me before with knitting stuff! You're always so helpful, thank you. I get what you mean about finishing off, thanks that's very clear. But I would appreciate pics if that's not too much of a bother, especially about putting it through the last stitch, is the one I've just worked? When do you turn the work? I know Im a nuisance, so don't worry if you cant do pics.

I am loving this pattern and I really, really don't want this to slow me down or put me off.

I am popping out now, so will check back later.

Thanks everyone.

Turn between row 3 and 4

RahRahRasputin · 10/05/2014 14:24

I'm making a version of this blanket. I don't understand how you've made a sample without understanding the instructions about the gaps and turning. I don't mean that rudely, just that if you've made the sample you've already done those things. Unless your sample is only one row?

I also don't tie my new colour in, I tried but it seems messy. Instead I just make a knot on my hook and chain into the first gap, as I would if I were changing colour doing a square pattern.

When you do the groups of trebles, there's a gap between each one. That's the gap you're meant to put the trebles into on the next row.

Assuming you work right to left, at the end of the first row you would then have your hook in the final loop and all of your work to your right. You then couldn't carry on crocheting, easily anyway, without turning your work over so all of the work to the left of your hook. Then you would start your next row.

One edge of my blanket is wonky at the moment. I am hoping it'll even up later as I'm not sure if I'm going to bother putting a border on. I expect if you're doing the border that will help with the wonkiness. Assuming your wonkiness is just because every second row is slightly indented?

You can't change font or colour on here, but you can make text italic by putting a ^ either side or bold by putting a * either side, if that helps at all in the future. I know that's unrelated but the capitals made me think you were panicking at first Grin

Drop the short thread of your new yarn and continue. Make the last chain stitch and work a treble into the same stitch that you chained into. Then continue working the pattern as normal.

Apologies for the multiple single posts but I thought it best to show you what I meant step by step rather than trying to flick between photos on the same post.

I've never used up my photo allowance before. Grin

RahRahRasputin · 10/05/2014 17:29

Ah that's what I do but with just single yarn rather than doubled. Might try your way next time I change colour Woolly :)

piemashandliquer · 10/05/2014 19:58

Woolly, that's brilliant, thank you so much for taking the time to do the photos. I have done a ripple sample and it turned out ok. I am doing the granny stripe so presumably in this pattern I do what rah rah says and go into the first gap and do my chain 3. Thank you too rah rah. To answer your question rah rah, I did the colour changes the way very pink knits Stacey suggests for the ripple which is really like woolly's but with a knot. I got confused in the attic24 pattern as she doesn't say when to turn, so didn't know whether I should put the new colour through the far left or far right stitch.

I can't wait to get DD into bed and get cracking.

Woolly, you are a hero, thanks for going beyond the call of duty Thanks
