So I want to knit (or crochet?) something... Complete beginner!

I think I want to make something.. But I don't know what, or what's going to be easier to learn first?!

Someone made my dd a blanket when she was born, and I love it, it is super soft and chunky material, meaning I wasn't too concerned when she slept with it over her face!

I want to try and make one for my ds who's due end of July, is it hard? Help?!

I crochet and knit. Different people suit one or other. I would say I do both at the same level, but it took me 38 years to get to that level in knitting and 18 months in crochet.
Get yourself some cheap double knitting wool, I would start with 4mm knitting needles and a 4mm crochet hook I know other recommend larger, but my hands are small.
There are videos on you tube showing you how to start and give it a go. You can buy tutorials on Craftsy for both which can take you further. If you settle on one or the other then following a blog can help you get ideas. Now I have moved to Crochet I follow 'Little Tin Bird', Attic 24, According to Matt to name a couple.
If you want to make a blanket I find crochet is quicker and easier.

I learnt to knit when little. But had to learn again when PG with DS1 as I wanted to make a blanket. Took me a very long time to get it done. With DS2 I learnt to crochet and I found it easier and quicker.
I learnt using you tube video.

Agree get some cheap wool. Style craft Special dk is good. I've first used it recently but it's nicer then other cheap wool I've tried.

Revelry website is a good place to get free patterns.

Okay, I'm excited! Will probably have to wait until Tuesday now for a shop to be open!
There's an independant sewing/ crafty shop near me, will that stock the things I need/ will they know what I'm talking about..?

There are loads of free tutorials on you tube but if it helps to have something in front of you then it might be worth buying one of the introductory magazines which often have a visual guide to stitches at the back.

Personally I find knitting easier to teach to beginners than crochet but then I'm more experienced at knitting

I love your blanket but would consider making one out of squares as a beginner. Not only does it allow you to do more complicated squares as you get more confident, but it's more portable, you're not grappling a large bit of knitting as you get further on and you can really see it progress.

Also if you get yourself in a right pickle that you can't work your way out of then at the worst you can discard that square and start again and lose very little.

Register on Ravelry. It's free and contains loads of patterns and many are free.

And feel free to come back here if you get stuck!

I find crochet easier and much less confusing to undo if you make a mistake. Agree with all the other advice re. wool etc.

On line is probably cheaper you could spend the weekend perusing such websites as Deramores, Wool Warehouse and Love Knitting. I buy my hooks from Purplelinda crafts or Wibbling Wools. So much to look at and tempt you.

I couldn't learn crochet from pictures, but picked it up really fast from Youtube tutorials. Just search for "beginner granny square".
