Have decided it's really time for me to at least master the basics, hemming, etc.

Unless you plan to get really arts and crafty all you need in a machine that does straight stitch (of course) a zig-zag and button holes. If I was you I would spend my money on a good qaulity basic machine instead of something fancy from a lower priced range. Don't go to a retailer who only sell one brand such as a Singer shop and if you have got the money get a new one, reconditioned machines can be more trouble than they are worth if you get a dodgy one.

Thanks you! That's just the advice I needed

How are you planning to learn, jabberwocky?
I want to do this too, though I already have a machine. It's a spare one which my MIL gave me but it's been staring at me reproachfully from the spare room every time I go in there.

There's a little quilt shop not far from us and I think they give lessons. My mother is a good seamstress too and I figured she could give me a start. Am wishing I had done this a long time ago, but better late than never!

brother machines are normally cheap and cheerful

Thanks Mrs. F! I found two online that looked good and they have them both at Wal-Mart! I think I'm going with the one that has the one-step button-hole instead of 4 steps.
