crochet blanket help please.

I've been advised to post here for traffic :)
My dm recently gave be a very long crocheted blanket. It was crocheted by my dgm in the 70s as part of her rehabilitation following a stroke. I have very strong memories of her and her carer making it. My job was to sit quietly on the floor and hold the wool. I was about 4 :)

The blanket is too long and a bit too scratchy to use as it is, but it is beautiful. I'm not crafty at all. I wouldn't dream of trying to do anything to it myself as i would spoil it for sure.
I would love someone to make it smaller and add a soft back so i can use it as a blanket for my 8month old dd. I would be very happy to make a donation (agreed charity) and donate the remaining squares to woolly hugs If anyone Is interested? ?
My dgm was an amazing lady and put so much determination and care into each square, it seems a shame to leave it in a drawer for another 40 years.

How big is it? Could you add a backing to it and use it as. Large play rug for your child?

Thanks Arts It's long rather than wide, I'd not feel right about it on the floor (dh would probably give her her lunch on it! !!) and would worry about little fingers and toes getting caught up in it. :(

Hmm. What about turning it into a tapestry for the wall? In little ones room maybe? Get someone to add a heavy backing on it, add a rod loop at the top and hang on the wall like a piece of art.

Too far for me to help as postage would be extortionate.

I've knitted/crocheted blankets for both my boys and backed them with minky/plush from plushaddict. it was so easy as plush doesn't fray. I cut it the same size as the blanket and sewed it on using normal thread. Really easy, promise! Good luck.
