there's some fantastic sari ribbon that would look fab.

I guess vibrant colours, and something to do with lights (festival of lights etc.)

UCM · 12/08/2006 07:35

Paisley beading, lots of it, I know it's a bit boring but you could do loads of them with sequins, beads, tulip paint. Alternatively, if you have a sari shop near you, you should be able to get some fabby beads and decs to stick on or just some ideas.

stitch · 13/08/2006 16:13

what do you mean by sari ribbon?

yes, the vgibrant colours idea with flowers and beads is good. but not red flowers with green leaves. i did one and dws1 said it looked more like a christmas card than an eid card. thats how good iam at coming up with ideas!

with the beads do you mean threading them all on soemthing then gluing them on the card?

Draw a paisley teardrop shape and fill in with beads sequins ribbon etc, anything bright and beautiful really

UCM · 13/08/2006 19:09

I have looked at some of these cards and others and flowers with words would be good as well.

Not sure if I have got the paisley thingy mixed up with Divali (completely diff religion)

Clintons Eid cards

here

Also a crescent & moon seems to be on lots of them.

calligraphy would be absolutely appropriate (both a card maker and studying Islam as part of my degree) otherwise if you're going for someone who is fairly devout, geometric designs only, even flowers can be offensive to some Muslims if drawn- and I am sure you know no figures, never ever.

I wuld suggest medallion stmaps, as they seem to correlate with a lot of islamic art that I have seen; we have a Qu'Ran stand at Uni with an almost-floral design siomilar to that on many stamps, eg the Anna Griffin ones.

stitch · 14/08/2006 01:38

thank you peachy and ucm
i have loads of little bits which i could stick down as you suggested. and the sparkle with some nice words should look good.
now if only i had good handwriting

i have some medallion stamps that i bought and have hardly used. i could try those. ive never done embossing with a rubber stamp. do i have to use some sort of special heat thing, or can i use a hair dryer?

OP posts:
MarvellouslyMilitantPeachy · 14/08/2006 08:07

hair dryer won't work, you can (and please be so careful- I don't want to be sued, it IS dangerud if yu're not careful, I lie the paper on a metal spatula when I use this technique) a toaster. I do for techniques like triple embossing

I'm away until Thursday now, but if you want to borrow my heat tool for a few weeks CAT me or e-mail me on peaches and cream 04 at bt internet dot com; I've got a few cards to do but I can batch stamp at a trate of knots then post on

Pixiefish · 14/08/2006 09:00

alternatively put your iron on without steam and put the paper with the embossing powder on- on top of the hot plate. Not itoning the powder but on the underside of the paper so the heat goes through it iyswim

champs · 14/08/2006 14:42

here's the sari ribbon!! store used just for pictures. you can get the ribbon over here

stitch · 14/08/2006 17:46

thank you. id love to borrow your heat tool, but what if i break it?????
the sari ribbon is gorgeous. im going to check out my local knitting shop tomorrow before trying to buy online.

i m going to try the iron this evening. ive also been reading the other thread about heat embossing, and have realised that my inks are whispers as well. im glad i havent got loads of different colours now.

peachy i wont use the toaster at all as it just sounds too cdangerous to me. i ll email you.

Pixiefish · 14/08/2006 17:48

you can picka heat gun up fpr a tenner if you're worried abnout breaking peachy's

stitch · 14/08/2006 18:08

from any craft shop? and are the tenner ones any good? coz ive seen some oon sale for thirty pounds.
thanks pixie. im going to try the iron first though, as i like the cheap option the best

Pixiefish · 15/08/2006 07:38

i got mine from studio24 for a tenner. I spent £30 on a pink pig and it broke after a couple of months. Then i got one for a tenner and its going strong

Dingle · 17/08/2006 09:07

Sorry, not been around much! Need to fight the LEA for some support for Amelia who will be starting school in September!! But thats another story!

Rather than use embossing powder why don't you try a fine tip glue applicator and some fine glitter. Funny enough I've just sold a couple of medallion stamps to kkgirl- they were sitting feeling unused and unlove in a drawer!

Looking at that link, there are quite a few tulips (?) and particular relevance. I have an unused sizzix paper sculpting tulip die too!
