Knitting book for beginners?

Can you recommend a good knitting book for beginners please? I'd like to properly start knitting after a few false starts over the years and I've had a look on Amazon for books but would rather get opinions from Mumsnetters on what books they have found helpful.
I suppose I need to learn all the basics like casting on and off, different stitches, how to read a pattern etc as well as a few basic patterns I can try out to start off with. Any suggestions...

I started just before Xmas, I have Knitty gritty by Aneeta Patel. You can buy it for about £10-£15, but I found it bound with the sequel for £5 on the Book People! Nice projects, easily explained, although I have had to ask for a little help from a neighbour on a few occasions when got in a pickle! I have made the chunky scarf, the basic hat, flowers, all turned out ok for a beginner. Good luck!

Another vote for Knitty Gritty! Aneeta Patel explains things in a way that really made sense for this brand new knitter. I've made the chunky scarf and the girly scarf, the hat, flower, booties, baby mittens and wristwarmers.

I've also got Dorling Kindersley's A Little Course in Knitting which has lots of lovely stitch patterns.

I can suggest that you avoid Stitch 'n' Bitch, it's rubbish at explaining things clearly and the patterns aren't very nice. Knitty Gritty looks good though. Youtube is great, if you struggle with anything that you read in a book you can see it demonstrated.

Great thanks! I was considering Knitty Gritty so looks like that one might be exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks!
