Can i teach myself to crochet?

When I look at crafty things I always like the crochet things the best. I want to make big gauzy scarves and suchlike.

I have a book from the library and i think i understand the pictures. I am not terribly patient and tend to give up easily. How likely am I to even complete a chain? I bought a crochet hook.

I learnt by following the Crochet Crowd's tutorials. Check them out on YouTube. Attic24 as suggested up thread also excellent. In live with her blankets! Ravelry do lots of free patterns plus some paid for (VERY addictive though). I also blame learning to crochet for my Pinterest addiction...

Took me 3 days to learn! Think it was around May last year. I've Tunisian Crocheted a few scarves for the DC's too.

Trying to get to grips with a pattern for fingerless gloves, and hats next.

Cheap hooks from Amazon good for starters, but my favourite hooks are the Addi Swing hooks. Much more comfortable.

I agree cheap hooks are okay to start with, but you need to try different hooks to see what suits you. For me it is Knit Pro waves which are soft touch hooks even though I am in the South East I get them sent from Purplelinda crafts in Inverness as they happen to be the cheapest place.
I can not work with bamboo or steel.

I started with You Tube too - I was already a knitter, which did make it a bit easier. After a couple of years, started teaching other beginners - so it is possible to learn and get pretty good from watching other people.

I started with Amigurumi animals - nice a small projects with just one stitch. You learn all about increasing and decreasing which is a good skill.

My husband has shown an interest recently and is struggling with getting his chain quite right. For me, the chain is the basis and you must practise getting it neat, uniform and even. the right tension of your chain is important too.

Your foundation row - the one after the chain can also be tricky. Find a video which shows you exactly which holes to go into and how to keep your tension even

Even after all these years, I am still learning. Tunisian crochet is my latest learn and I love it. it looks so nice and neat.

The best thing about crochet is that you can put it down whenever you want. it is often small enough to put in your handbag and take places with you and it is often addictive. So just crochet when you want to. Don't put pressure on yourself.

I think using the right hook for you makes a big difference

I love Addi Swing hooks. I don't get on with bamboo ones - got one to use when I was going abroad last year and I hated it.
I can use the Addi hooks for hours without my hands aching. I also like clover soft touch and prym hooks.

Thanks for the tips. I just got a basic one. Time to start watching you tube etc!
