Hi all hoping someone can advise me. I want to start making jewellery as a hobby and have seen two kits on amazon and was wondering if anyone with knowledge of the craft could tell me which one would be better?

cheaper one

£30 one

thank you

I would get the cheaper one; you really need those three types of pliers but a lot of the stuff in the pricier one you will not like or will go to waste IME, better to spend less now and then maybe more later on stuff you definitely want.
have fun!

The cheaper one looks fine to me.

I have the second one and found it pretty good as a starter kit. It has nice beads and an instruction book too.

Cheaper one is fine (in fact I think I got that one)

You may find that you have to buy new bits as you run out or pliers break, but by then you will know what you need/like using.

great, thanks. is there anything else I need? A bead board?

I used to use a folded piece of paper to lay out my design. If its not much extra then why not.

Yar, I say cheaper one too. You also don't really need to buy a book because there are a lot of tutorials on the internet.

FOR BEADS:
Don't just get a big mass of crappy plastic beads (though they certainly have their place in some projects!); you'll end up with a load of stuff you will never use. Get a feel for what sort of beads you want to work with.

I usually prefer semi-precious. You can get them quite cheap in bulk from China, for example, and they have a nice weight to them. I go to ebay for this because I find UK prices too much unless someone has a specific stone I want.

FOR TUTORIALS:
Here is a really good place to start. Indeed, if you bought all of their stuff it would cost a small fortune but it may give you some adaptable ideas:

There are other basic skills tutorials on their website.

Pinterest is also surprisingly good for jewellery making tutorials and ideas:

Do you have a bead shop within reach? Def agree with not buying loads of random beads, go to a bead shop or fair and spend an age browsing :o) If you can do a course too I found it really helpful.

plipplops · 19/01/2014 14:36

Oh and I think the cheaper one looks fine too x

Yes there's a bead shop not too far away I will go to- I went in before and it was amazing- like a pick n mix with beads!! Have been looking into classes but I can't see any advertised anywhere, I'll maybe ask in the bead shop if they know of any! Smile
