Doubling up yarn

If I were to double up a DK weight yarn (knitting) what weight wool could I compare it to? Bulky? And what size needles should I use? I know there would be some degree of trial and error, I'm just looking for ideas for a blanket and want to use up some DK stash but want to knit something much chunkier.

Thanks in advance!

Wouldn't it be more of a aran weight? I would use a 5mm hook

Can you do a swatch?

I have just completed a blanket done in garter stitch squares with two strands of DK held together. I used 5mm needles and my guage came out at 20 stitches to 5 inches 36 rows to 5 inches. It is much more than aran, more a chunky or superchunky.

Let me just add,the blanket I did was called Double Vision, available on ravelry and it was a brilliant stashbuster!

As a general rule, your needle should be twice the width of your yarn. So you'd fold a strand double (or in your case, two strands), and choose a needle the same width. Swatch to see if you like how it knits up, and go up or down a size accordingly.

Btw, a swatch doesn't always have to be 10cm. If you're just trying to get an idea of what it looks like, you can do a much smaller one.

Thanks everyone. I'll be happy if its a bulky or even super bulky weight as it will be much quicker! Looks like I'm going to have to do a swatch. Never bothered with that before!
