I really enjoy kit format hobbies. I made a miniature shed and loved it - the precision of it and being able to follow a 'recipe' to get to the outcome.

I don't like the idea of airfix-type planes/boats/cars as I'm rubbish at glossing/painting.

I don't want to knit or crochet but I do want to build something.

Any ideas? I think I might be good at making a dolls house or similar but what to do with it afterwards? A wooden boat? I think I'd like t work with wood somehow as it just needs staining!

Thanks Flowers

What about matchstick art? I think you can buy complete kits or the seperate materials to make your own designs. I can remember my brother building a windmill from a kit when we were young and I watched in envy because he wouldn't let me help. Think he just gave it a coat of clear varnish when it was done.

How about dolls house shadow boxes? Smaller than a real dolls' house but you still get to have fun making a scene.

Thanks, I like both of those ideas - will look into them further :)

We used to make toy theatres when we were kids, shadow theatres and stage theatres. We used to use cereal boxes etc, but I've been toying with the idea for ages of making a proper 'grown up' shadow theatre - I love Arthur Rackham's silhouettes and think these would look beautiful.

I did make a doll's house a few years ago - I love it. DH refers me to the doll's house whenever I get the decorating bug! Far easier to paper a 12" square room than a 20' square room - no need for ladders!

I've just had a quick look for shadow theatres on Pinterest - there are some absolutely stunning ones.

Oh thanks syllabubble I always forget about pinterest! I've been searching 'miniatures' but keep getting lots of war game figurines!

This is a very fancy example of a shadow box

Or this is a one-room display.

I think the dolls house shadow box sounds like a great idea. I saw one once that was like an old fashioned drapers shop with rolls of materials ribbons and so on.

Yeah, I was going to recommend those as well. There's a whole series of kits themed on little shops: pet shop, frock shop, tea shop, cake shop, record shop, etc.

This place sells a bunch of the kits:
