help needed with knitting hat on circular needles!

I am doing my first project on circular needles - this
Ive got chunky wool and size 10 needles, and followd the pattern and cast on 64 stitches, but it was massive, so started again with 40 stitches on, but now im stuck when it comes to the decreasing!
It says to knit 6, k2tog, then k a row, then next row k5, k2tog etc ec

can I still do this or do I need to do it a different way?
Thanks

E.g. if you start with 64 stitches knit 6 k2together you get 56 stitches. Then 48, 40, 32, If you do the same over 40 you get 35 stitches, then 30, 25, 20 etc.

So I think it will work out roughly the same.
Although it May be a fraction more domed.
If that makes sense.

So basically, go for it. The numbers work out ok.

thanks, I did just that, I was so desperate to finish it!
I enjoyed doing it so much, and it was really quick to do, however it is a bit pointy on the top! bugger it.
Maybe if I missed out the knit rows in between the decreases it would be better?

Did think it might be a bit pointy. If it us just a little peak rather than the overall shape...you can miss out the last few knit rows or you can end a row or two sooner and pull the wool through the remaining stitches e.g. if it ends with 5 stitches on needle, pull through when it gets to 10.

If it is quick.to knit just experiment a bit.

thanks, I might unravel the last few rows, see if I can save it!
