I have just discovered I can make clothes!

I have made myself a flared panelled skirt out of four old shirts belonging to dh (they were going to go to the charity shop but I nabbed them), and today I made dd2 a sundress - complete with lined bodice and buttonholes! Never done them before! All without patterns too - just made it up as I went along.

Next week I am going to make shorts for dd1 and dungarees for ds if I am feeling adventurous...

And do you take orders????

You clever, clever thing. (from one who needs a lie down after sewing Cub badges on!)

Miaou · 22/07/2006 22:01

send me some shirts fmf and I'll create you a unique skirt for £20!

lol about the badges though

well done , I felt inspired to try this a long time ago because I had a friend who was fantastic at making her own clothes. Mine fell apart in the wash though, so I gave it up. Make sure you finish them well!

that's fab, Miaou! i'd love to learn to sew.

fullmoonfiend · 22/07/2006 22:10

picture please so we can admire further!

dd1 is tall for her age and skinny. i have such a hard time getting clothes to fit her. be lovely to sew her some and some lovely costumes as well.

SSSandy · 22/07/2006 22:12

buttonholes scare me, can't do them, I stuck to zips.

southeastastra · 22/07/2006 22:15

ha well done, i had to make my own clothes in the 80s people should sew more!

Miaou · 22/07/2006 23:37

Good point sssandy, not washed them yet! However I have been meticulous at double sewing at the ends (though haven't overlocked all my seams )

It's a lot easier than I thought it would be though - I used to make clothes using patterns when I was a teen but found them such a PITA to do (and so expensive too!)

expat I started off doing costumes - you know, dog, devil, cat, nurse, witch (mostly halloween stuff!) - doesn't matter if they are a bit wonky after all.

I'll see if I can get dh to take some pics of my handiwork - don't hold your breath though

Oh, brilliant, Miaou!

I have an arrangement with fabric and thread. I don't touch it, it doesn't fray and go in knots...

SSSandy · 23/07/2006 19:48

Yes, piccies please.

I used to zigzag all the edges after cutting out the pieces and before sewing them together but there was always a bit I missed.

So when are you making a shirt, eh?

Miaou · 23/07/2006 22:03

ooh blimey I think a shirt is a bit too ambitious ! I thought I might try a wrap skirt for me for my hols though.

Dh has promised to take pictures for me (not tonight though!)

ONly joking about the shirt of course. Couldn't understand why ANYONE would ever try and make one of those.

Wrap-around skirt sounds good. You must be a natural talent. I never once tried to make anything without a pattern.

moondog · 24/07/2006 11:06

I have two sewing machines upstairs that am a little scared of....

SSSandy · 24/07/2006 11:07

They are frightening, make sure you put the hoods on
