Hi the subject shows what my knitting pattern for hand warmers says, when it is time to make the thumb. Only I am new to knitting and I have no idea what this means.

Is this a wrap and turn, then knit to the end, and cast on 5 rows, turn again, and knit 13 sts? If it is a wrap and turn, how exactly do I do this? Is there a good and simple knitting video online somewhere?

I would appreciate anyone's help, thank you.

I'm not sure what you mean by wrap and turn but do you have stitch holders, you don't need them but they would be handy for this.

Take it literally.

Rib 25 stitches. Stop there, turn your knitting around and look back at the 25 stitches.

Cast on 5 stitches into the first stitch.

Rib 13 including these 5 so you should have 17 stitches left.

You then knit up the 13 stitches to form the thumb. I imagine you will finish it off and go back and work the rest of the stitches back together to form the hand part.

Im a novice knitter myself so I can't decipher the instructions but you could try searching on YouTube for a tutorial on hand warmers & watch the bit around the thumb? That's what I would do! Good luck!

Thank you, I do not quite get it, but think I am tired and taking another look after I have slept might help. If am still stuck will be back to repost tomorrow. My major concern, is once I have turned how to I get the yarn in the correct place to start casting on into that first stitch ( told you I was a beginner).

Right so you've got to cast on extra stitches basically in the middle of a piece of knitting?

There's definitely no wrap and turn here, it would say if it wanted you to do more than turn the work. I think all you do is knit (okay rib) those 25 stitches, then turn the work round, so the stitches you've just knit are on your left hand needle. You will have some unworked stitches on your right hand needle but don't worry about them. Now you need 5 more stitches, so you cast those on to the tip of your left hand needle, basically like . Now you knit (well, rib) those 5 stitches you've just cast on so they're on the right hand needle, plus another 8, then turn again.

There shouldn't be any problem with the yarn being where you need it; when you've finished working the thumb you will cast off and then cut the yarn, and reattach it wherever you're working next. It doesn't really sound like you need to move the stitches you're not working on to needle holders, although you can do for clarity, it will quickly be obvious which are the 13 stitches that you're working on for the thumb.
