Knitted Christmas gifts ideas

ClairesTravellingCircus · 25/11/2013 13:34

I'd like to knit gifts for family members, mostly kids (toddlers to preteen), but a few for grnnies, aunties, etc

I have tried googling but after wasting an hour on there I'm still uninspired!

Grateful for any ideas

As you can imagine they need to be quick knits! ??

Mittens
Scarves
Stocking for the toddler?
Tea cosy

Have a look on Pinterest Christmas themed

CoffeeandChocolateplease · 26/11/2013 13:43

For the Grannies and Aunties, can I suggest these?

Washcloths

I am making them for relatives in Canada and for my sister and a friend here in the UK. I've made two each and going to wrap them up with a soap or shower gel. I used Rico white cotton and they've come out fab.

Have you looked on Ravelry? Depending on your knitting speed you haven't got a lot of time.

If you can knit in the round, the fabulous Yorkshire designer has just released a pattern for Xmas baubles which look great.

A wonderful pattern for small people is Milo (you can buy it through Ravelry) but again, you are up against it to get one or two done for Xmas.

Something with chunky yarn would be best, you should be able to find heaps of chunky cowls/scarves on Rav.

Hi thanks all,

yes looked on ravelry but couldn't find anything inspiring (that was free).
They really need to be small projects…and I was hoping for something a bit…different from scarves, cowls, mittens,

I like the washcloths idea, thanks Coffee.

I also really like the baubles tribpot (not sure about the fluffy yarn though), would they be ok in cotton? Do you know if the baubles are stuffed, or is there a polystyrene ball inside?

Thanks a lot!

Cushion covers especially knitted in a nice plump aran design.

tribpot · 26/11/2013 15:47

Hiya, the Ann Kingstone ones are stuffed after the fact - the ones in the pic are stuffed with little polystyrene balls. The other one I'm about to try - this one is knit around the ball. Eek!

Shouldn't be a problem in cotton, if you've got some, give it a try!

I love knitted things, wish I was in your family! Knitted brooches, animals for children and flowers for adults, mug cosy with a cheap xmas mug from poundland. Dolly blankets, digital camera cases...

toomuchpizza · 26/11/2013 16:07

I've been knitting a lot of gifts this year (and still have heaps to do!). I think my favourite has been hot water bottle cosy's. I'm working on my 3rd one now and it was a free pattern. They only take a few days to do. Here should be a link to one of my completed ones.

I've also been making fingerless mitts, hats and gloves.

Daisybell1 · 26/11/2013 22:10

I'm doing cushion covers based on this chart

Friends' children are getting a selection of hats - the Repeat Crafter Me designs are great and fun.

I love the look of the knitted baubles - if you can crochet, I'm sure I've seen a pattern for crocheted gingerbread men to hang on a garland.

5 year old boy : knitted Lego hand mittens, crochet Lego scarf and hat.
4 year old girl : hat with interchangeable brooches and matching scarf.
Mum : face cloths ( to give with her favourite face wash)
Friend : skinny scarf and if I have time, matching wrist warmers
My dd (11) crochet hot water bottle

Hmm. Leaving all this a tad late... Lets hope bump waits til new year to come ;)

Daisybell1 · 26/11/2013 22:20

Do you have the lego patterns? They sound fab!

Bluecarrot · 26/11/2013 22:30

I haven't got the links saved ( just printed off instructions!) but if you are on Pinterest, that's probably where I saw them. There's a few Lego ones about. The best one was on a blog with a name like mooly? Ill see if I can find it but links hard from my phone!

Bluecarrot · 26/11/2013 22:32

Gah, no it wasn't it was this one.

I tried a few and this have me the best look but the bricks are small. Find for a small child but I'd look to chunkier wools for older kids and adults.

Love the lego scarf but my crochet not up to scratch yet!

Bluecarrot, can I ask what patterns did you use for the girl's hat brooches?

Thanks

Claire's - I haven't picked one yet! Saw crochet butterflies somewhere, and will do some flowers. Attic 24 springs to mind :)

Can you crochet? With a reasonably thick yarn I can make a beanie hat in 1 1/2 hours. V v popular.

Umm, what did the bottom warmers look like?

the bottom warmers were delightful, like a large nappy for the warm and stylish!

by the way, mumsnet reported what i said before, how very rude, no rules were breached!!!!

Purlesque · 27/11/2013 06:22

I've knitted mug cosies, cowls, heart shaped coasters, a shawl, knitted bows tied onto hair bands and flowers on hair clips.
I also knitted a couple of mini gift bags and egg cosies. I opt for very quick knits, and these were quick.
