I would buy the items individually - different colour cotton, pins, tape measure, scissors and a sewing book for a child. It would be nicer than buying a "set" of sewing bits and pieces and better value.

Check out the cath kidston books on Amazon. They come with materials, so my dd made her own bag, this year she has make a rag doll.

I would say go to a sewing shop (John Lewis haberdashery dept?) and asking their advice and buy them individually. Buy good quality thread, assorted needles, pins. A pack of machine needles in assorted sizes. A pair of cutting our scissors for fabric suitable for a small hand, a small pair of snips, marking pencil, a seam ripper, a ruler/tape measure, some felt, some nice fat quarters (a quarter of a yard of fabric already cut for you), velcro, press studs, ribbon, a metre of iron interfacing and maybe a pretty sewing box to put it in. Avoid cheap stuff from markets and most pre-packed sewing kits - I thought the CathK one in a tin was rubbish. However the CathK sewing project book is very good.

Lots of nice beginners' books on Amazon too. A 'how to use your new sewing machine' would be a good choice.

Lucky girl. Hope she loves it.

DD had one for her 8th bday.

Do you have an Ikea near by? Fabric cheaper there.

I bought her a sewing box from JL and two books-one was a Cath Kidston ragdoll book. Try and get some of the larger thread spools(?). The little ones run out very quickly.

I also bought buttons and Velcro
