just wondering - i want to make a couple of throws to go over the childrens beds - is this called a quilt or an eiderdown. i have one on my bed which i love (shop bought) and i want to make the same but smaller for kids - seems like two peices of fabric with some sort of padding in between. lots of stitching makes lots of squares on the material - not explaining this very well, sorry. can anyone help?

I think that a quilt is just a general term but an eiderdown is one that is filled with eider duck feathers.

a quilt is a duvet (i think) and an eiderdown has feathers in

oooh, thanks for replies. i just went on cath kidson website, which is where my 'throw' is from and she calls it a bedspread. so...how do i make one? i am new to sewing, have progressed to making some simple curtains with my mums help and this will be my first solo project. any advice? think it should be quite simple, do you agree?

Could it also be described as a Comforter ? I amde a simple quilt for ds from a Prima pattern before he was born and it really wasn't that hard as long as you can sew straight and get the measurements accurate.

Lizs - is prima a magazine? do you still have the pattern?

It was Prima Baby magazine but, I'm afraid, over 8 years ago. I don't think I have the pattern still (did look for it when pg with dd) but will see if it is with other patterns tomorrow or they may have repeated it since. It was about 100*140 cm with hearts appliqued on (I changed it to animals for ds')

A patchwork quilt is usually quite thin, you can make a patchwork design for the top and then use a single piece of fabric for the back. You can buy the wadding (or batting) from a quilt shop. The bit that I find the hardest work is quilting all the layers together as it's quite heavy to move through the sewing machine.

If you just want the quilts without the hard work then Verbaudet have some really attractive ones in their new catalogue. Making it yourself is much more rewarding, but by the time I've bought all the fabric, batting and threads it usually works out more expensive then just buying one ready-made.

Damn, that link just brings you to the homepage, type "bedspread" into the search box to bring up the quilts.

oh thanks for that bran. i am pretty keen to make one, although realise i may be mad. i am happy to have a single peice of fabric on both sides so it is reversible which may make it cheaper, do you think? where do you get your wadding? is there an on line source?
