Knitters' Thread ...

I have started knitting again. I've finished two baby hats (one with a four-eyelet design, another with panels of a fern-looking lace) and am working on one with a simple all-over lace.

I figured lace made sense for this weather.

What is everyone else working on?

sounds good nqc. please post a pic when you've finished!

i have nearly finished prototype sock no. 2. went and got wool for a pair for my dh and my mum, then must decide which type of sock to knit.

also bought some really really fine mohair to knit a lacy shawl. it's 2 ply i think, really fine and soooo beautiful, knitted on a 3.25 mm circular needle. am so excited!

ooh - a knitting thread!! I usually have insane bursts of knitting activity - knitted both ds's baby blankets which ds2 still loves, have knitted jumpers for dp and ds's and last Christmas, due to extreme poverty, knitted fluffy scarves for all the grandmas, aunties etc.etc..!

Have just bought a 'stich'n'bitch' book whilst on holiday and absolutely love it. I'm going to knit some dinky little purses for this Christmas for everyone, and maybe some bobbly cushion covers. And maybe even find out if there's a stitch'n'bitch group near me - is anyone part of one?

wartywarthog · 13/08/2006 18:55

heh stitch 'n bitch? not heard of that one. i don't belong to any groups, but i don't really tell anyone that i knit either! i'm sure they'll think i'm wierd... well they probably think that anyway...

i'm with you on the insane bursts of knitting activity, although in my case i oscillate between beading and knitting. i just try not to leave any projects unfinished, but not so successful on the beading front as my projects are far too ambitious.

Littlefish · 14/08/2006 14:50

Are any of you up for helping with this secret project ?

I've done a couple of cabled ones.

Help - does anybody have any nice simple patterns for aran-weight wool? Bought this lovely Scottish Tweed Aran wool www.link{laughinghens.com/knitting-wool-yarn.asp?yarnid=442\in lovat} but have realised it is too light a weight for the pattern I had in mind. But I can't find any pattern I like online - everything is a bit too patterned or fussy. I can do some cables and a wee bit of intarsia, but would like just a nice plain cardigan-jacket. Any ideas appreciated!

florenceuk · 14/08/2006 22:39

Whoops - link is this one: in lovat

wartywarthog · 15/08/2006 10:20

that's lovely wool! have a look at this site - they link to lots of free patterns and you might find something you like.

florenceuk · 16/08/2006 11:54

Thanks Warty - will have a look. What I need is one of those old-fashioned wool shops with loads of patterns in ring binders!

wartywarthog · 16/08/2006 18:55

yeah, but i always find those patterns are straight out of the 70's!! although john lewis is pretty good for patterns. is there one near you?

tamum · 16/08/2006 20:02

Hello everyone

florenceuk, I think they must have made a mistake on that page. 23 sts per 10 cm can't possibly be aran weight- it sounds like DK to me. Do you know which you have? According to Rowan it should be 16 sts per 10 cm. I will happily try and help find some patterns but it's obviously fairly important to know which tension is right! A good site for this kind of search (though limited to Rowan's own patterns) is the The Wool Shack . They let you search on a yarn to see all patterns that yarn uses- there are some nice ones for Scottish Tweed Aran but I can't link directly.

Meanwhile I have abandoned my lace cardi for now in favour of a Noro Silk Garden one. I love that yarn.

florenceuk · 16/08/2006 23:00

Yes it is the Aran one, definitely. Any suggestions appreciated, I will look at the Woolshack link as well - thanks!

wartywarthog · 28/08/2006 14:14

so how's everyone doing?

i've just finished a couple of squares for marina. bought the wool on the internet and the actual colour was totally different so was quite cross. anyone tried to buy matching colours over the net? nigh on impossible i say?!

now knitting socks for dh, half way through the first. enjoying knitting on such tiny needles!

pipsqueak · 13/09/2006 00:00

has anyone any ideas for a pattern book for jumpers etc for teenagers? dd1 is 11 but wears 13-14 clothes . i have the pipsqueaks book which is fab (on marinas recommendation iirc) and would like somethingn in hte same sort of style ie still obvioulsy for a child but bigger iykwim. cant seem to find anything suitable and am itching to knit!

pipsqueak · 14/09/2006 23:31

anyone? desperate to knit!

wartywarthog · 15/09/2006 09:35

i'd pop along to john lewis and have a look through their pattern books to see if you like anything.

this site also has loads of free patterns, with links to other sites. she might find something she likes.

pipsqueak · 15/09/2006 14:38

thanks wartywarthog. sadly , live in a knitting desert ...no j.lewis for miles! but will definitely have a look at the site . thanks for the link!
