Stiffening crochet snowflakes ... Starch?

Jaynebxl · 05/11/2013 07:29

I've been crocheting snowflakes for a garland. I will need to block them as the spokes are bending up but then they will go all soft and floppy. How can I make them go stiff and hard enough to hang again? Was thinking maybe hairspray, or would some kind of starch spray? Any suggestions other than Viagra? Thanks in advance.

Spray starch is what I use.

They sound like just the sort of thing a friend of mine would absolutely love! Have you got a link to a pic and the instructions?

Jaynebxl · 05/11/2013 07:51

I've done some of these, Onesleep, but also some others which I can link to later.

Thanks. Thanks

I used spray starch on some I made last year and they held up well over Christmas.

I made Attic24's ones last year and used spray starch too. It worked well, and it didn't mask the sparkling bits in the yarn.

I used a mix of PGA glue and water last year. I use starch for a lot of projects but this was a much stiffer(and longer lasting) method although it took much longer to dry. You can also sprinkle with glitter after you've blocked them.

Obviously I meant PVA glue!

I use spray starch when I am in a hurry (dry with a hairdryer)- but PVA and water mixed works better. You need to lay them on a plain cloth to dry.Use pins to hold them in position while they dry.

I also use glitter glue on xmas decorations because it looks really pretty. Just paint it on with a brush.

I also have some decoupage glue which dries clear - I am going to try that at some point and see what it looks like.

Thanks everyone.

TheThree how did you apply the pva? Did you brush it on?

I dip my crochet into the PVA then pin it out to dry. The more saturated it is the stiffer it will be. I use a 50/50 ratio of pva to water. If you use water soluble PVA (washable) you have the option of washing it and redoing it at a later date.

You can mix potato flour with water and dip them in that, that's what my nan used to do and it worked well.

TheThreeMoos · 06/11/2013 22:02

I do exactly what whatdoesittake48 does. Works really well and made lovely tree decorations.

Jaynebxl · 07/11/2013 07:30

Great. I'll try the pva first since I already have all the necessary ingredients in stock.
