Help! Want to sew a onesie but don't understand the instructions (McCall)

Hello,
my latest rather ambitious project is a onesie (which I will then customise with hood and tail to turn into a dragon) for my almost 5 yo.

Bought pattern, fabric (velvety black) and have cut out the bits. But now don't understand what to do

It's called a jumpsuit and starts with pinning a trim to the side edge of each front and edgestitch. Trim? Why? And on the right side of fabric?

I thought the zip would be my problem, but I can't even start

And what does

mean? English is not my first language and googling only adds to my confusion. Can someone help me and talk me through this please?

Not sure about the first question but for the "views" one, you need to look at which version (view) you're making and do the instructions that relate to that view. Some will relate to all views, some to a specific one only

Is the trim where the opening is? Is it to neaten the edges smartly?

Anyone?

Does it say what you do with those seams next? Are there "trim" pieces among those you have cut ?

View A - you only do that instruction on version A,

All Views - you do that instruction on all of the different versions.

I would ignore the trim instruction, it is probably cosmetic.

Ok, I know what you mean, there are A, B, C, D and E to make from one pattern. I just checked and yes, A has a sort of trim on the picture of the finished costume (yay, one problem solved).

I just found out the zip is at the back whereas I need it at the front because of the dragon's tail.
I hope that doesn't cause a problem.

On the description there are little triangles sticking out, as if the fabric had little noses. If I understand correctly, I have to cut out little triangles (under arms, etc) to avoid masses of fabric. Is that correct? The littles noses should really be pointing inwards?

And one last question, there is no mention of zigzag stitch (whatever it's called) allaround the edges, should ai do this?

If you are going to swap the back and the front you may need to adjust the height of the necklines. Or just put the tail right next to the zip?

The little triangles, or notches, are so you can match the pattern pieces together when you need to sew them, so do cut them all out. Inwards or outwards, either way doesn't matter.

If the fabric frays then you will need to zigzag round the edges, if it's velvet then it will.

yes, neckline will have to be lowered at the front (back).
Because the back has dragony spikes on it (or will have) I can't put the zip there.
I also find it better if dd can put the costume on herself.

Will start sewing tonight, have 2 weeks. Dh thinks it's too ambitious.
But I'm pretty stubborn

Update:
the Onesie is done, minus the hood, which will be dragon's head.
Tail is almost done, missing the tip bit, but has the belt which is vital as dd wants a costume that is Toothless (the dragon) and bat, so tail has to cone off.
What's still to do is the wings. slightly scary, but I did it small scale on the tail and was sort of ok.
Another 4 days to go. Only broke 2 needles. Sewing over the metal bits (coathangers) in the tail.

5 needles later: the onesie, hood and tail are done, wings are still in progress.
Please remind me if I ever agree to make a costume again, to just say NO!

(PS the needles broke whenever I managed to hit one of the wires in the wings. Wires from wire coat hangers, cut into shape with a weird tool the roofers left behind)

We need a picture on you profile please. Well done. Sounds an epic journey, you WILL succeed again, you'll forget in the long run what you went through, next time will be a lot easier.

Congratulations.its absolutely fabulous. You must be chuffed to bits.
You both might also like THESE for every day wear. I did 3 for DGS and friends.
The only thing I changed was I sewed the spikes to the hoodie as open diamonds and then folded them into spikes and sew round the edges. I used a cheap fleece for the spikes.
