Knitting Pattern Help needed!

Help!! I'm making a cable knit hat for DD (It's my first hat and cable knitting pattern). So far I've been repeating rows 1 -12 to the desired length. I've now got to the part of the pattern that shapes the hat and I don't know what I am meant to do and don't want to mess up what I have done so far.

The pattern says

Shape Crown
Row 1: k1[patt6, p2tog,p3, p2tog,patt8, p2tog,p3,p2tog] to end.

What does patt6 and patt8 mean? Does it mean continue the pattern I've been following in the previous 12 rows for 6 and 8 stitches? If this is the case then my patt6 is going to cause me problems as by following the pattern I would have to to a p1,c6B but then my c6b would be incomplete as that would add up to 7 stitches.

Oh wise ones please help! :)

Do you have a link to the pattern?

From what you have typed I am assuming that your cables are worked on your patt6 and patt8 stitches and your decreases are worked on the stitches in between.

yes, that makes sense

woolly yes that is correct. The cables are on patt6 and patt8. However the decreases will mean that the patt8 will not line up with the cable properly. Confused

Before you start decreasing have you got 7 stitches between each set of cables?

I visualise the pattern as k1, cable 6, p7, cable 8, p7, cable 6, p7, cable 8 etc all along the row. Is this correct?

By decreasing on the p7 stitches you will then have 5 stitches in between each cable - effectively giving the impression that the cables are being "pulled closer" together. The way the pattern works will be to avoid decreasing on the actual cables themselves for as long as possible by using the stitches between the cables first. On your next row after you decrease you will k5 in between your cable stitches.

Does this make sense to you? As I have a habit of saying things that I understand but it sounds like complete gibberish to others Grin
