OP posts:
babe2be · 28/10/2013 21:24

i'm reasonably new to photography (took a short course in April), and am now doing a portraiture course. There aren't qualifications at the end, it's just for enjoyment. If you add me as a friend on Flickr i'll accept and you can look at my pics if you want

Siikibam · 28/10/2013 23:24

I've been photographing a number of years now. I haven't had much of a chance recently due to a baby. I want to work on my off camera flash technique.
My flickr is www.flickr.com/photos/brenda_k if you want to take a look.

KinkyDorito · 29/10/2013 20:22

Beautiful photos Siikibam - some stunning flowers.

KinkyDorito · 29/10/2013 20:24

And yoshaza too.

I'm a very amateur photographer who is trying to persuade DH to let me spend £300 on my first DSLR. Might start a Flickr account.

babe2be · 31/10/2013 16:26

Here are my pics

My Photo's

babe2be · 31/10/2013 16:27

ooh do it kinky, it's the best thing I ever did!

Loving everyone's photo's!

KinkyDorito · 31/10/2013 19:28

I've set up an account!

Can I ask what cameras people use?

babe2be · 31/10/2013 23:01

kinky I use a Nikon D3100

zipzap · 31/10/2013 23:29

I'm a keen amateur - I like taking close ups, landscapes and over the last couple of years I've taken some stuff at local arts events and museums too that I've enjoyed.
My flickr is www.flickr.com/photos/83208002@N07/

And I've been using a Canon 650d which I was lucky enough to get on Black Friday on Amazon last year. Bought it without a lens as I was planning to use my existing lens - Sigma 18-135mm which had worked brilliantly on my previous canon 350d. But it's really unreliable on my new canon - not sure if it is the lens or the camera as when it is good it is great. But instead of being able to point and shoot and know that when I press the button a picture that is in focus somewhere in the shot, even if not where I was planning will be taken about half the photos I take are either out of focus (some a little, some loads to the point they are now abstract art!) or it just won't take the photo. No idea why but left in a bit of a quandry now - don't want to buy a new lens if the camera is duff but need something that will work reliably. And the lens that I do want - canon 18-200mm (ish!) has been around for ages so they should be updating it soon, I don't want to buy it and then discover they are bringing the new one out and I could have either got the old one for a good price or the better lens albeit more expensive. There's also a couple similar size lens' from sigma and tamron but they get mixed reviews, but have been happy with previous sigma one (until now!) so could go with them too potentially.

And I know the super zoom lenses aren't the greatest thing but I rarely get the chance to change lenses so want a one - covers - all - eventualities one.

Oops, enough babbling Blush

Loving everybody's pictures - great idea for a thread!

KinkyDorito · 01/11/2013 07:20

babe the D3100 is what my dad uses; it takes beautiful photos. I'm in love with the D3200 on Amazon at the minute, but am supposed to be embracing austerity so can't really justify the cost at the moment.

zipzap it's all over my head at the moment Grin. All I know is 'Auto' and a couple of other modes. I am a total amateur and I really want to learn.

These are mine then:

Taken with my snap-happy Canon PowerShot SX160.

KinkyDorito · 01/11/2013 07:25

Lots of moments and minutes in my post...

SoupDragon · 01/11/2013 08:01

I think the most important part of photography is being able to see the picture, not the equipment or even the skill to use all the different functions. You can get a damn good photo from an iPhone with the correct composition and a crap snap from an expensive DSLR without it.

Hushabyelullaby · 01/11/2013 15:36

I've name changed from babe2be to Hushabyelullaby cos people replying to my posts were finding it strange calling me babe :) This way at least I match up with my Flickr name.

zip I like your pics, especially the one of the blue bird

kinky I agree with soup that it's the ability to 'see' the picture and not the equipment. My lecturer said the exact same thing. I have a lovely photo of my DD just as she bent down to pick a flower in a field full of cowslips, and it was taken just using a 10mp digital camera

zipzap · 03/11/2013 18:35

Thanks kinkydorito - although I'm not sure I can take any credit - I don't remember taking any pictures of blue birds! And I'm definitely still very much an amateur - I just enjoy taking pictures. I rarely use 'proper' settings - although I do try to use some of the preset modes beyond auto (not least because auto used to bring up fatal errors on my previous camera if I needed the flash, whereas it was ok with the modes so I was able to carry on using it until the flash stopped working altogether! I was kind of forced into it but it wasn't too scary).

I'm another one that agrees with soupdragon - seeing the picture is so important, the actual camera less so. I've seen some great photos taken on iphones etc and have some lovely ones taken on my first digital camera (I hung on until I was able to get a massive - at the time! - 4mp camera! And I didn't always use it at full resolution either).

I'd love to do a course one day, but just never had the time to do it (at least one that would fit in with the dc and childcare etc etc). i did used to go to the local camera club which was great and I learnt a lot there too but unfortunately it just got too tricky going and I haven't managed to sort it out to go back on a regular basis.

Longdistance · 03/11/2013 18:49

Love everyone's work.

I have a Canon DSLR and did a basic day course earlier this year on how to use it effectively in Manual mode, and not just leaving it on automatic. I must get back into it as I broke my stupid leg, and couldn't move around and go out to take snaps for months.

Have got some amazing shots since. Think I might join Flickr too now :)

Hushabyelullaby · 03/11/2013 20:09

oops zip I meant I like the blue bird taken by kinky

KinkyDorito · 03/11/2013 20:12

Go on Long - you know you want to Wink.

I'd love to do a course, but can't afford it and am already doing a course I can't afford in something else... I'm obviously clutching a creative straws!! I like taking photos as it's free (now I have the camera and the rechargeable batteries) and makes me look at the world in a different way. I certainly feel much more appreciative of the little things now. I got incredibly excited over some pink mushrooms I saw growing near a bog this morning Grin Grin.

Longdistance · 03/11/2013 21:45

I used to love photography as a teenager at school. I did art at school, and loved it. My mum still has loads of my pictures I drew when I was little. I'm 38 soon lol.

I really wanted to do photography as a career, but my dp's put a kibosh on that one, saying it wasn't a proper career blah, blah...

The course was a condensed one day course, so fairly basic, but explaining about light, angles, focus etc. was a really useful course, but this was in Oz.

zipzap · 04/11/2013 00:08

doh! I'm doing it too now - meant to say thanks to hush and about the camera stuff to kinky. And flickr isn't pulling down all of your photos kinky so I can't see the blue bird picture that hush likes!

Kickarsequeen · 04/11/2013 00:14

Zipzap! Check the connections on your new camera where the lens attaches, it may be that they are not clean enough. Best suggestion, careful clean with alcohol on a cotton bud. I'm an amateur who would love to go pro, my youngest has just started school, so maybe I can try to make it a reality... Smile

zipzap · 04/11/2013 11:14

Ooh thank you kick - I will definitely try that. Now to see if I have any alcohol that is suitable for cleaning...

Will let you know how it goes!

And I know, I dream of going pro too but not sure that I'm good enough. Need to start doing something about it if it's ever going to be anything more than a pipe dream!

Kickarsequeen · 04/11/2013 11:30

You're welcome! Hope it works!! I had to go as far on my 500d as using v fine emery paper, it worked tho! So fingers xd!!
