Fussy knitter in search of the perfect yarn

I've had an idea for present I want to knit my friend - socks. To make it a little more thrilling I want them to be yellow and black striped like a bee, and a little bit furry (again like a bee, and to stop them looking just like rugby socks). I'm thinking they could be used as either bed socks/slippers (literally if I don't put any soles on) or wellie socks. So I need some yarn.

I saw this in my local wool shop, which is nearly perfect - except it's too glittery. They couldn't suggest anything better ... so I'll ask mumsnet because you know everything (of importance)

Has anyone any suggestions? Or am I after the impossible Grin

You might have more luck on Ravelry.

LavenderBriggs · 11/10/2013 14:46

You could just use normal eyelash. Give me a minute and I'll find the best place to get it (need to rummage through emails).

Fluffy

Have a look at these people - they're pretty cheap. I use them a fair bit and I think their record for delivery was something ridiculous like 36 hours.

Dutchoma - why did I not think of Ravelry? Doh! And thank you, will head over there later.

Lavender - eyelash. That'll be another doh!

Thank you both. Will check back later when kids leave me alone!

Grin You're welcome.

Now I want to buy fluffy wool. Must resist.

Little owl knits uses angora held together with kid silk for a fluffy loft. And you could find a 4ply angora so it is the right gauge for socks.

StainlessSteelCat · 11/10/2013 20:33

Ahhh, ravelry. Love it :) Didn't find socks or yarns. Have found several new projects to add to my notebook!
I think the angora sounds wonderful, but I'm on a tight budget and I'd like them to be washable - so I think the acrylic eyelash it is.

Thank you, have a Wine on me

Umm do you actually want to make wearable socks?

Get some proper sock yarn... Regia do a fluffy one and knit it at a decent tight sock gauge. Angora would wear terribly and eyelash.... Next to the skin ....uurgh!

Yes you can make even dk or chunky socks but my little toesies would feel every stich of a sock sole like that - walking on Brillo pads would be my thought! Well unless they were " over socks" for wearing like slippers.

Sorry just my 2p I knit a lot of socks.

StainlessSteelCat · 12/10/2013 19:27

Thanks Theas. I do want wearable socks, you have given me pause for thought - as usual I had a good idea and ran with it! Am now pausing ...

The angora I had discounted for that (and washability) reason. Plain DK (what I've used before) has always worked well, but I wanted a bit more fuzz ... perhaps eyelash with a fleece lining and soles to make proper slipper socks, or fuzzier sock yarn and add embellishments (wings ....) to make them bee-ish.

I'm going to have to give this more thought aren't I? Guess that's why you knit from patterns - let someone else have the brain ache Grin

I had a really long think before starting this project in the end. I found this pattern and this yarn, and I ended up with a pair of knee high socks for my friend ... so not at all what I started out with, but thanks for all your input, I think I've made her something far better than what I had planned!

Thanks

StainlessSteelCat · 08/01/2014 14:24
