Please suggest a knit stitch to me

I want to knit a beautiful giant cowl to wrap itself around me elegantly with an interesting design but but but, I DO NOT want it to twist or fold over itself. I can manage any stitch as long as it is on two flat needles. It is a yarn that calls for 4mm needles but I am going to double it up so will use 6mm needles. I want it to be lush and chunky. What stitches can you recommend to me please?

Moss stitch?

IDugUpADiamond · 26/09/2013 14:47

Moss is lovely and I will probably use it if I can think of nothing else because it stays flat but I am hoping for something even more striking Grin

Double moss or basket stitch - lots of texture in both of those.

IDugUpADiamond · 26/09/2013 14:52

Not keen on basket. Double moss ahead of the race right now Smile

I've just done a cowl in linen stitch. It's easy, looks good and works brilliantly with different colours.

Herringbone?

Linen stitch? Never heard of that before. I've looked it up and it's beautiful, very classy, but not dramatic enough.

Herringbone was my very first thought, it ticks all the boxes. My only worry is that because I'm doubling up the yarn, I'll make it very tricky on myself! Do you not think that herringbone will curl though?

Really easy cable stitch? You don't need a cable needle, as it's not a real cable, and the other side is ribbed so both sides are detailed. Pretty sure I saw the tutorial on very pink knits on YouTube.

Drop stitch is probably a bit too simple?

SusuwatariToes · 26/09/2013 15:55

Yes, you might get yourself into a guddle if you're doubling the yarn. I don't think that it curls... But I might be wrong, I've not used it yet. It's in my queue for when I finally have the time to knit something for ME.

Purlesque · 26/09/2013 18:44

I made a lace cowl, it's really pretty.

Purlesque · 26/09/2013 18:50

New stitch a day have loads of stitches.

IDugUpADiamond · 26/09/2013 18:57

I don't want to do lace, I want something really butch Grin; drop stitch is out for that reason. I think herringbone is out because it will be too fiddly.

Really easy cable, is that mock cable? I do like mock cable, I think that's what I'm going to do actually. Do you think that I should do a garter rib with it though?

What about a simple lace stitch with thicker wool? I made DH a scarf in chunky that does not say 'lace'. It was a simple yarn over/knit 2 together affair for patterning.

goodjambadjar · 26/09/2013 20:51

It might be the same as a mock cable.
You work four rows, multiples of 4 plus 2, the third row is the one that does all the work, IYSWIM?

goodjambadjar · 26/09/2013 20:53

How do you mean, a garter rib, sorry.
Do you mean the wrong/other side? So to not get a garter rib would you have to purl every stitch?

IDugUpADiamond · 27/09/2013 06:59

goodjam, I also had no idea what I meant by garter rib, so I looked it up and found this: www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/garter-rib-baby-blanket

I think we have a winning stitch now!!! Grin

That looks lovely! The blue pic really shows off the pattern.

I'm glad you've found something, good luck, and don't forget to post pictures!

patchworkchick · 27/09/2013 09:02

I'd go like others with moss stitch.

roguepixie · 27/09/2013 15:45

Brioche stitch?

tribpot · 29/09/2013 16:18

The designer Stephen West has just published this which you might like!

IDugUpADiamond · 01/10/2013 20:01

Okay I think it's going to be double moss

Can anyone help? I am trying to finish off a v neck knitted jumper. It is in rib and in the pattern they have printed is a cast off stitch that I am not familiar with. I can't understand it. Here goes k1, p1 28 times, p1) insert right hand needle into 2nd then 1st stitch on left hand needle as if k2 together, k1 then slip both sts over p1. Does anyone know if this type of stitch has a name if I could look it up on the internet?
