I don't know anyone apart from MIL who enjoys sewing except me. I'm still learning all the time and go in and out of sewing phases. I just wondered if it is a dying hobby, or if there are others like me out there.

Was it the same as project catwalk? it was my absolute fave program at the time, although I'd have loved it if there had been more shown about the designing/making and less standard reality tv stuff.

giraf... I used to use the Prima ones too until I learnt how to make my own, which I still get a kick out of being able to do.

Am sick to learn there was an American project runway and I didn't see it. Catwalk was on Sky and hosted by whatshername - used to be Hugh Grant's girlfriend - slutty dress.

WooHoo me too!

Current project is a skirt and jacket for dd1 am wondering if I need a new sewing machine though as mine is nearly 10 years old now and was cheap then.

Did an apprenticeship when was 16 - anyone else got a business type background or are you all from a hobby POV? (I wish I had never doen apprenticship as took all the fun out of it IMO)

Dp bought me a sewing machine for my birthday . I wasn't expecting it, but it was a great present (He always has better ideas than I do for him.) Also bought me some magazines for ideas, which I slavered over, but then instead slaved over some proper curtains with locked-in blackout lining for ds1's room. Have just finished them, did far too much by hand and would do more machining with my next pair of curtains (probably for ds2). Would love to start making clothes for us all, but currently worrying about OU exam in July so putting off anything else.

Apart from taking in a few trouser to suit my J LO arse not something I really do. I would love a decent machine to do soft furnishings though.

I think clothes are so cheap and so quickly out of date that it is too much effort to make your own.

Securmummy - I'd have loved to have done an apprenticeship, I guess it means you learnt properly. Do you fancy teaching someone self taught?

I guess I was taught properly - although I did seem to spend a lot of time on my own in the corner hemming felt a little like cheap labour sometimes!

I am not sure how much good I would be as a teacher - I have forgotten most of it lol

Am happy to help if I can though of course!

Ooh, anyone know of where I can get a cheap overlocker? ATM i have to use the "kind of an overlocker" on my machine and it is rubbish!

Have you tried Ebay?

Hi there, am not much of a sewer but I have got a sewing machine and have recently made a (small) patchwork floor quilt for ds to play on (he has outgrown it now though!). But I have a load of dh' shirts that he doesn't want any more and I'm thinking of making them into a patchwork skirt (using lengthwise strips rather than squares), but want to jazz it up a bit - maybe some applique, embroidery, wavy/zigzag hem, or maybe not straight strips, ones with a wiggle in them... not sure what to do really! If anyone has any thoughts or suggestions I would love to hear them
