Quilting - what weight wadding do I use?

Quick question for those with quilting know-how

I want to make a patchwork quilt for a double bed & machine quilt using meandering stitch, what weight & type wadding is best?

If I chose to stitch in the ditch instead would I need the same weight or something thicker?

I like to use 100% cotton batting, as it washes well and is natural. I have used wool and it works brilliantly, for a warm winter quilt. If you want a deep quilted look, you could use 2 layers of batting, or a polyester wadding with more loft. Doughtys do a great range if you are not close to a quilting shop, (www.doughtysonline.co.uk/shop/Wadding) also The Village haberdashery (www.thevillagehaberdashery.co.uk/sewing-patchwork/wadding-stuffing-and-cushion-pads/wadding). Both do mail order and post very quickly.

Each wadding will say how far apart you have to quilt. It usually says quilt up to 5" apart, for example. If your ditches were 6" apart you'd have to quilt closer iyswim but if they were 4" apart you'd be fine.

I refuse to use polyester because it makes my hands itch. My fave is bamboo.

Marking my place as the last wadding I bought to quilt my abandoned quilt top ended up being used to make lots of patchwork bags instead Blush
