Where to buy nylon thread to crochet chunky bag?

I would like to crochet a bag similar to these two www.ebay.co.uk/itm/The-Sak-Brown-Chunky-Zip-Topped-Double-Strap-Bag-FAB-condition-/141044618903?pt=UK_Women_s_Handbags&hash=item20d6ea1697

carriewolf.net/2011/07/08/how-to-insert-a-zipper-and-lining-into-a-crochet-purse-tutorial/

I have read somewhere that size 18 had been used to crochet the green bag from the 2nd link using Mexican nylon thread. Probably omega hilo www.anniescatalog.com/collections.html?collection_id=113.
I have seen something on amazon but in black. I would like brown, lime green, green, orange, navy. I just do not know where to look for but the thread must not cost a fortune. I like the bag on ebay, however, the handles look either discoloured, worn our or greasy.
Many thanks for any suggestions.

I wonder if this is the same thing? The seller has quite a few colours

Would Zpagetti yarn give you the finish you are looking for. It is available at John Lewis here. They even have handbag kits.

What thickness is "size 18"? Is it thin? If it is thin, isn't it going to take aaages to crochet a bag?

Would something like Drops Safran do the job - it's a 4 ply cotton and I imagine lacks the sheen of a nylon but might be a good alternative. Or possibly the thicker Drops Muskat which again is cotton but has a slight sheen to it. I imagine both are significantly thicker than the nylon thread though.

Thank you so much for suggestions. i like the colours of Drops Muskat. Really pretty and the price is not bad either. The spagetti ones are quite pricey but would they really suit for crocheting a bag because of elestane? I really like it but I am also worried whether the colour is going to run if I am in the rain.
I did not see that nylon on amazon. I really do not know anything about size 18. I am on my phone but will research the size a little bit later.

The one on amazon, size 18 is 0.5mm thick. I guess that is too thin for crocheting bags. Is it not?

That's my opinion, yes. It would take ages wouldn't it??

PurpleFrog · 30/08/2013 11:55

I have found the cord on US eBay - it says it is 2mm

Thanks Purplefrog! I was trying to guess how did she take to crochet that bag :) Now I see that is the US size. Amazon sells 2mm cord but not much. Will browse later for more. Thank you again all.

At that thickness, I imagine the Muskat would be an alternative, although probably not as hard wearing.

cherryblossoming · 30/08/2013 13:58

Soupdragon, thanks. I like Muskat as an alternative.

14m isn't very long.... joins would be difficult to disguise well.

MerryMarigold · 03/09/2013 09:51

this is in lime green

MerryMarigold · 03/09/2013 09:51

Oh, it's only 5m length, sorry.

MerryMarigold · 03/09/2013 09:53

this one is 30m and 1.5mm

Love the bags by the way...great idea.

The thought of crocheting anything with nylon thread is terrifying!

What ever you get ( and the drops cotton would be nice) remember if you want it to be thicker just run as many threads together as you need to!

MerryMarigold · 03/09/2013 10:06

I think the point of nylon with a bag is that it won't get so dirty, stretch so much and will easily wash/ wipe clean.
