Help! What does row 2 mean?

Row 1 (RS) K1, p1, k1, p5; rep from * to end.
Row 2 and all WS rows K the knit sts and p the purl sts.

Does it mean where I've ended the row on p5 that I start the next row with p5 or do I do k5 because they look like k stitches ?!

Ah thanks for that. This is the pattern, if that helps.

You've got to the end of your wool stash, BogChicken?? Is that even allowed?!

Well I've done a cycle of 16 rows and it looks nothing like the photo!

Knit the knits and purls the purls means as they present them

So if you end with p5, on the reverse they will look like knits, so you knit them. The reverse of a knit will be a purl bump - purl that.

www.knittingfool.com/StitchIndex/StitchDetail.aspx?StitchID=15 this seems to be the same pattern written down differently, see how that one goes?

How many stitches are you working it over?

tribpot · 26/08/2013 17:47

Yes, I'm afraid Moaning is correct - if you knit 5 then purl 2 on the right side, as you turn it over, you have to knit 2 then purl 5.

If you find it difficult to tell what stitch you're looking at (which is quite normal when you're a beginner) you might find it easier to write the pattern out in full. Knitting patterns are traditionally written to save on space, so this instruction for row 2 will have saved the pattern writer from having to put in detailed instructions but it's not very helpful if you're not used to it.

Ah thanks. I actually abandoned the pattern a few rows in as it wasn't looking nice and it was a square for a blanket so I opted for a pattern I enjoy knitting instead!
