I found YouTube tutorials very useful - I used them to learn the basics, and then worked backwards from that to understanding crochet patterns (and charts, to some extent, though I am not very good at working from them without a written pattern alongside them yet). I have been crocheting a number of different squares to practise what I have learned.

Ravelry is a very good source of patterns, and lots of them are free.

Have you tried granny squares? Once you've got the hang of it it's very simple and works up quickly

I agree about Ravelry, there's some fab patterns on there, I made a gorgeous bobble stitch blanket that was a simple pattern :)

Here's the pattern :)

I would second Attic 24. The ripple tutorial is fab.

I second the attic24 blog. The ripple blanket has some great photo tutorials that are fairly easy to follow.

The good thing about crochet is that once you have mastered the basic stitches (chain, double crochet and trebles for example) you can actually make some fairly sophisticated looking stuff.

Too slow at typing! I now third the attic24 blog Grin

SoupDragon · 14/08/2013 20:03

I agree - Attic24 has lots of pictures to help you understand the patterns. Great for beginners.

I've never got my head round ripple, I'm inspired to try again now!!

I want to make the Attic24 christmas wreath - it is so pretty and colourful (and I would have it up all year round).
