best material for maxiskirt

That is not jersey?would non-stretch cotton work?which kind?I rather make a skirt that doesn't need lining.so maybe a heavy fabric?not gonna be floaty tho.or a light fabric and I can wear a underskirt?someone help this beginner pls!

cottons would work for a summer maxi, go for lighter weight fabric not a quilting weight. Lawn, light weight linens, even soft gingham or chambray - try Fabrics Galore in Battersea (sell a little on line and by post).

Batik fabrik seems to be quite a heavy cotton, good for your purpose?

Whats the pattern like? particularly around the waistline..

i got some black jersey,not sure if it would be too clingy?

They work well if the pattern is cut 'on the cross' although this needs more material, and you can't use 90cm width unless you insert a triangle near the hem.

A wrap around skirt works well.

In the past, I've had them in cotton, velvet and even a tapestry one that was an upholstery fabric that I'd used to make a matching coat - teenager in the 70s

On the cross is when the straight up and down 'match with the grain' arrow is at 45 degrees to the selvage. It's the angle you get when you hold a piece of fabric at diagonally opposite corners and you see how much stretch there is.

You need a triangle of material at the corner of the fabric at the side hems because when you cut a pattern 'on the cross' in 36"/90cm fabric the width of an a-line skirt at the hem is too wide for the fabric. You'd only have 4 skirt panels - any more and it would be really difficult to get the layout on a reasonable length of material.

If you've got a knee length skirt pattern that you like, it's quite easy just to pin the pattern pieces onto newspaper, and lengthen them to make a maxi skirt pattern.

Sari fabric lengths would work quite well, but you would probably need lining as the fabric can be quite thin - not to mention see-through.
