I have agreed to make a blanket each for DD1 and her friends - they are off to university this autumn - DD1 is in her 2nd year. I made a ripple blanket last year for DD1 in dusky pink and cream and another this year for her best friend in fondant, black and white - this looked like a liquorice allsort and was pretty cool.

I'm now about to start the edging on a rainbow granny square blanket (photo on my profile) and I am looking for inspiration for the last blanket.

DD1 suggests "pink" as helpful as ever Grin

I have about 40g each of fondant, candyfloss, raspberry and claret. My local yarn shop has got fondant, candyfloss, old rose and pomegranate in stock. These four look lovely together, but I don't know if my oddments of the darker colours would mix. Ideally I would buy from my local shop, but am not completely adverse to ordering from Deramore's.

So I would appreciate some advice on colour combinations and a nudge towards some different patterns. I plan to make a sofa throw in blackberry stitch so would like to avoid that particular pattern as I don't want to get sick of it before I use it for myself IYSWIM.

I'm currently making a granny stripe blanket in emperor, bright pink, pomegranate, claret, plum, magenta, raspberry, pale rose, mocha and cream (in that order).

The emperor and bright pink look really striking together - but they are very bold and in your face.

The plum, magenta, raspberry and pale rose look gorgeous together - much more delicate than the bright pink!

I'm not really sold on the pomegranate - it's okay but it looks quite orange-y next to the other colours.

How about a circles-in-squares blanket? You can do all the circles in the different colours and the square borders in something neutral - that way the colours aren't ever actually next to each other so it's easier to mix lots of different ones in.

Like this although I'd have more of the border colour or a smaller circle.

Thank you Mhw and Soupy

I hadn't considered putting a colour like Mocha with the various pinks. I think that would look lovely if I decide to go down the ripple route.

I have seen that circle in a square pattern before and liked it. I'm going to have some 'Emperor' and some 'Lavender' left over after the rainbow granny blanket is finished. I'm leaning towards this pattern with the border done in 'Old Rose'. Do you think the purple shades will blend in or should I stick to the pinks?

I'm rubbish at blending colours. I think I'm far too anal and like repeating colours and patterns. The more I try to be random the worse I get HmmGrin

I am currently crocheting a blanket in lime green, fuchsia, yellow, rust, purple, teal and turquoise. I may not be the best person to ask! Grin

Seriously, though, purples and pinks sound lovely together. I would put in a bit of cream to lift it and make the colours pop - maybe to crochet the blanket together and edge it, perhaps?

Thank you SDTG your colour choice sounds amazing. It would certainly brighten up a student room!

I think I have decided to do circles in squares with the middles in deeper pinks and purple and the square bits in pale pink. The young woman that I'm making it for is very precise and always coordinated and I'd like to give her something that she would use - not just thank me and put it away in a cupboard.

I made the attic24 summer garden throw for my mother (using Stylecraft and trying to get as near as possible to the shades Lucy used). I loved the colour mix. It was surprising to me how Citron and Raspberry go well together. I could never in a million years be so creative and put colours together like that.

I think one of the squares I have used for my blanket is the Attic24 summer garden square - her choice of colours is so lovely, I agree.

My blanket is going to be pretty random - lots of different sizes etc, and I am just going to do little strips or squares to fill in the gaps - it is going to be a sort of random patchwork affair.

Am I right in thinking you live near me - and if so, would you like to meet up some time for a crochet/coffee/blethering session?

TheWoollybacksWife · 15/08/2013 14:41

Unfortunately I don't think I live near you Sad - unless you have moved to Northamptonshire. We met at Ally Pally last year and I would have loved to meet up again and talk all thing woolly with you.

I knew we had met up somewhere, and I was assuming it was a Glasgow Woolly Huggers meet up. Darn it to heck! Maybe we can meet at Ally Pally again sometime. And this time I will travel properly light, so I don't knacker myself hauling 2kg+ of handknit cardigan, that I didn't need AT ALL, round the hall, thus rendering myself too knackered to browse and buy yarn!
