How do I sharpen scissors?

I have (had) a great pair of dress making scissors, but recently I had to cut some suede backed fur and it seems to have completely blunted them.

I'm trying to make my daughter some light cotton pyjamas to stop the bugs biting on holiday and they won't even cut through this - anyone know how I can sharpen them myself?

I wouldn't personally, I'd get them sharpened professionally to make sure they are smooth ans sharp and the blades aren't damaged.

Well I have the FISKARS scissor sharpener, the big one that costs about £10 and it is brilliant

If you fold up some tin foil and cut through a few times it will temporarily sharpen them.

Thanks all - where do you go to get them sharpened professionally? I'd be happy to do this as they were expensive to buy - they are Fiskars ones but I can't find anything on their website about sharpening, but maybe I can look for the sharpener device...

I've tried the tinfoil trick after googling, but it hasn't worked at all.

Watching this thread - I have no idea where to go get scissors sharpened. I have a vague feeling those places that cut keys can do it?

Very fond of Fiskars, I have a kitchen knife which I think DH must have bought in Denmark as they don't seem to sell knives in the UK.

Fiskar scissor sharpener.

Actually, looking at them more closely I think I have actually managed to bend the blades cutting that thick fur... there seems to be a slight gap in the centre of the blade. I tried sharpening another pair using a stone and it worked, so I tried on my cutting shears and the tips cut great - but not the central part where the blades look slightly bowed...

... last time I volunteer to make squirrel tails for school play!

That is my very exact sharpener, trib thanks for the linky.
It revived even the Dunelm 3-for-£1.99 scissors that I use for school

My simple little Wilkinson Sword gadget works well, thanks for the reminder. On the reverse, it's marked "Fiskars", which was surprising, but can't remember where I bought it.

This one works...Cut thin strips of fine sandpaper remembering to turn the sandpaper to sharpen bottom blade as well as top. Kept my beloved dressmaking scissors sharp for 20 years

I know nothing about sharpening scissors I'm afraid, but if you ever volunteer to make squirrel tails again - always cut fur with a very sharp craft knife, not scissors, and on the back (suede/fabric side if fake fur) not the front. That way you don't cut through the pile and your room doesn't end up looking like a small furry animal exploded in there.

I send mine to the sewing machine guy in our high street. It sounds like a very good idea if they are bent, find someone to ask about in person. Good luck.
