to make me a bespoke activity cushion/rug/mat.

I am looking for something like this

www.boxndice.com.au/products-page/specialist-therapy/dementia-activities/plain-fiddle-cushion/

but they are only available from Australia.

I need it for mid September and don't want to spend more than £40

What a fab idea!!!! Wonder if they would work for toddlers too?!?

lifeistooshort · 06/08/2013 13:56

Hi CamperWidow

I actually thinking of tentatively starting to do that sort of products and would be really interested in helping you. Let me know if I can be of help

lifeistooshort · 06/08/2013 13:57

sorry I meant selpats!!

CamperWidow · 06/08/2013 20:30

Life I was actually looking at these wondering if they could be made over here....thinking more for toddlers.....

My mum made dd a wonderful fiddle mat with short cords, buttons, labels, textured sections etc. She absolutely loved it and it kept her completey entertained on car journeys.

ThePigOfHappiness · 06/08/2013 20:55

Google quiet books. They may be far cheaper and easily available. We've used some in a home I previously worked in, with great success

KurriKurri · 06/08/2013 22:23

Apologies for a slight highjack OP, but in case anyone is interested in things to make for people with dementia there is a pattern here for a knitted twiddle muff, which is similar in purpose to the cushion you mention OP.

Shesparkles · 06/08/2013 22:34

I wish I'd thought of this when my mum was alive-she had Alzheimer's and was a right one for twiddling-this would have really helped!

selpats · 08/08/2013 20:57

Thank you so much for all your ideas and offers of help. I've just seen my mum and I really don't think she would be able to be entertained by one of these any longer. My idea was too lateHmm.
However, despite my thoughts my dad has gone ahead and ordered one of these, which looks lovely but I don't think it is great.

be better

Sorry I posted too early.

If you look at the eBay one the buttons just look decorative and can't be fastened/unfastened. The ribbons old be better if they were longer do could be knotted or plaited etc

I looked at quiet books and really liked the idea as they would be less likely to fall off her knee. We will see how she gets on with the one my dad has ordered before I take it any further.

A big thank you to you all Wine

Selpats - so sorry your Mum has this horrible illness, my Dad also had Alzheimer's - he was very keen on undoing buttons/ nuts and bolts and zips and stuff even when quite advanced in his illness. Another thing he was keen on was if we blew up several balloons and he could flip them about a bit. He also had a little soft teddy which he liked to stroke even when he was pretty far gone.

Hope your mum does get some enjoyment out of her cushion Smile And hugs to you - it's a horrible sad thing to go through Sad
