Should be fairly straightforward, just take your time. John Lewis stock a range of patterns and they are normally coded for difficulty, the staff would help with the fabric quantities etc too.

mousiemousie · 09/06/2006 15:00

I think it would be fairly simple - ask advice from the shop selling the pattern eg John Lewis. Measure dd to get the right size but most patterns are for a range of sizes - you cut the outline for the appropriate size IYSWIM

What is difficult is finding nice fabrics to buy!

patterns usually have a bit on the back called 'notions' and it tells you what you need ( how much material, thread, any interfacing, etc etc) Those second dresses look more complicated to make than the first one
you've inspired me to get out material that I bought LAST summer for the dds and make them some tops!
good luck
(i'm not a sewer but I likke the idea of making clothes for the dds, have made dolly clothes before)

thanks guys

on the pattern I just see rafts of numbers ... I don't know what to measure on DD ... arrggghhhh .. its so confusing to the uninitated

any help?

WTF is interfacing?

OP posts:
auntyquated · 09/06/2006 15:11

interfacing is sort of thin plain stuff to put between 2 layers of fabric to strengthen it si ot sits right. you would need interfacing all around the neck

SoupDragon · 09/06/2006 17:16

Couldn't you just draw round the dress you've got?? It should be easy to see where the pieces are - droaw round it allowing 1.5 cm extra for the seam allowance.

KateF · 09/06/2006 17:26

Twiglett, buy iron-on interfacing, its much easier to work with. I have a similar pattern but make it up in one fabric and it's very easy. If you are a beginner just take it slowly and press as you go.

I started sewing with Burda patterns, which are graded with difficulty levels and there are ones for newbies.( I was told by a few experienced sewers that they are the easiest to use - dunno if this is true but I found them to be ok)
I actually made a few dresses sim to the first one and it they wern't that hard and didn't turn out too badly.
I was given a tip to make your pattern last -(so you don't have to cut it) trace around the pattern on grease proof paper and then cut that out instead.
Have to say though I've struggled to find funky fabric too.
Also don't rush it.

Easy acres of patterns to look through. I only ever made one thing, a Christening Gown for ds2, but it wasn't particularly hard- justa bit time consuming.

TwinsetandPearls · 09/06/2006 19:06

The first would be much easier as you are not doing any gathering and you may even get a pattern that simply buttons at the back.

My main problem is getting material, I sometimes buy online.
