Sewing machine appliqué

Can anybody recommend a machine that does a good satin stitch appliqué?

I've got a Toyota 2260 - the smallest zig zag does not make a good satin stitch; I've ordered an open toe foot, but I don't know if it will be an improvement - has anybody tried it on this machine?

My Janice does brilliant appliqué - blanket stitch style. I will check what model it is in the morning.

Janice? Confused Janome.

Ooo thanks so much Stealth.

Ok, so my Janome (phone has learned that word now Smile) is a Memory Craft 4900, but there are probably cheaper models that do the stitch that I use for appliqué, which goes like this:

Does that make sense?

Hmm. Not quite. It's blanket stitch, more or less - looks like a comb.

Yes I know what you mean, thanks. Not quite what I want though, I'm trying to do stitches which are very, very close together, so you can't see the fabric between - a very small, close together zigzag would do it, but not on my machine. Does this make sense, and would your 'Janice' do it?

Yes, I know what you mean, and yes, it would. You can adjust the zig zig length and spacing as you want - I have used it for embroidery to give a solid block.

Thanks Stealth, that's good to know.

Did it take you long to get used to your machine, I worry that the more high tech ones will be pretty complicated to master?

We got on very quickly. One word of caution, though - pick a good dealer. A friend has the exact same machine but it has never worked properly and the dealer keeps trying to tell her it is user error, which it clearly isn't (we have sewn identical samples on the two machines to prove the point). I think mine came from John Lewis because DH found specialist sewing shops too scary Wink

Good to know...thanks so much for all your advice.
