I have aluminium crochet hooks and am heading on holiday. Can I take them with me?

My mum cant take knitting needles so im assuming no.

LizaRose · 01/07/2013 13:21

Knitting needles are on the banned list for cabin baggage here, but crochet hooks are not. I know people who have hooked on planes, a bamboo or plastic hook is your best bet to avoid jobsworth security staff.

If you mean hold baggage, you can take any needles/hooks you want.

DH calls my crochet " knitting in flight safe mode". I have used aluminium hooks on flights without problem.

However I have also quietly carried wooden needles and bamboo circulars- a person cant go 2 weeks without knittng yknow !

I wouldn't recommend forgetting your knitting when going to Spain. I ended up doing a "happy dance" whn I found some awful acrylic in a market as I had no yarn left and just my single hook lol.

Just don't mention what the ancient Egyptians could do with a crochet hook lol

mermaidbutmytailfelloff · 01/07/2013 22:36

I have done, both aluminium and bamboo ones without a problem.

I've just beeB to New York and happily crocheted my way back and forth over the Atlantic. I took one steel, one plastic and one bamboo needle in case of confiscation but no eyebrows were raised in security on either side. You can even take a small pair of nail scissors to snip your yarn. I didn't know this and had nail clippers....

MOSagain · 02/07/2013 22:48

Both knitting needles and crotchet hooks are allowed on flights, they are NOT on the list of banned items.
A friend and I recently knitted and hooked on 6 flights to and from south America

MOSagain · 02/07/2013 22:50

BAA regulations clearly say you can take knitting needles

Theas18 · 03/07/2013 15:52

Agree they are not on the list of banned items BUT everything is also at the discretion of the security team so if you look at them funny they can still take them off you.

SoupDragon · 03/07/2013 15:58

I took a bamboo hook, plastic darning needle and nail clippers to be safe. No problem whatsoever.

LizaRose · 03/07/2013 19:26

I had a pair of bamboo needles taken off me at Bristol airport. Presumably the security is the same for all airlines?

bernirose1 · 03/06/2017 02:06

Im off to Cuba on Tuesday amd want to take mine so i thoughht id look on the gov website amd here it says u can take knotting needles so im presuming crochet would come under the same category..i hope

It's at the discretion of the airport security and airline. I have been fine with both knitting needles and crochet hooks, but would always take cheaper needles and take the knitting off the needles in case you end up having to chuck them. People are often shocked that they are allowed, but they are no more dangerous or sharp than a pen or pencil and they aren't banned!

bowtieandheels · 03/06/2017 02:52

I've flown several times with large knitting needles and to my surprise was never stopped. Phew!

TheFurryMenace · 05/06/2017 18:14

I just got back from New York. I took wooden interchangable knitting needles (Knit pro symphony) and a wooden crochet hook. No problems at either JFK, Newark or Heathrow. I did check both the UK government website and the airline I was flying with, and both had written info saying it was okay.

Good luck.

I have taken crochet hooks on planes several times.

Outbound, at Glasgow airport, both my crochet hook and my scissors (short blade, within the guidelines) went through security with no problems.

Same trip, on the way home, Heathrow security pulled me aside to search my handbag - turned out they wanted to check the scissors - I was allowed to take them on board once they had been checked.

Another trip, at security at London City Airport, the same scissors went through without a problem, but they pulled the crochet hook out and went into a little huddle to mutter about what the h ck it was.

Same hook and scissors each time - three different responses from three different security departments. In each case, though, I was allowed to take the crochet hook and scissors in the plane.
