Dare I dye this dress?

I found a dress that fits me like a glove, this is a rare and amazing thing. It comes in a second version which I ordered hoping the print would be better IRL, but it's not and the overall effect way too pale for my taste and, well, look at it!. Obviously I can't cover the print with dye but it would de-emphasise it, right? I was thinking grey?

The dress is 97% cotton with a bit of spandex, no idea what the trim/belt is but it's all the same as each other IYSWIM. So, yeah, dare I dye it or should I just send it back. The fit is so good and it's lovely thick cotton, I'm loath to get rid but don't want to have wasted my money.

Any ideas? Tips?

Probably be ok. The spandex is enclosed inside the yarn its woven from like a core, so that wouldn't be an issue.

Cotton will take dye successfully, but watch out for zips and thread which probably wont

Not sure that you will be able to de emphasising the spots though. They will just go a darker colour

MrsLettuce · 21/06/2013 18:57

Thanks! THe zip is white and hidden in the side seam so not an issue. Invisible stitching at the hem, sandwiched fabric with no visible stitching elsewhere. Think things are ok on that front.

It's the trim / belt that's worrying me, it's satiny stuff. No idea what. Any chance it'd take some dye? I don't mind a contrast and certainly wouldn't expect it to match the white background or any of the shades in the print, but the pink is, erm, pink.

Oh, I don't mind the print as such but there's just too much white and pink and not enough of the beige and grey.

No, doubt that will dye

MrsLettuce · 21/06/2013 19:02

Urgh. Not even a tiny bit? Just so it's more a dirty pink thna pink.

Bugger.

I'd be happy to replace the belt and buttons so then it'd just the trim on the yoke.

Might I be able to do something with a fabric pen? Possibly?

Yeah, possibly never thought about that

Bump

It would be so easy to replace the belt and buttons, I'd dye it then decide what contrasting colour would look best for these items. If you added small amount of white cotton fabric or trim when dyeing, you could cover buttons and bit of trim to match the dress exactly (just another option).
