Which walking foot do I need?

I've got this Brother sewing machine and I'm attempting my first quilt, so nothing fancy. Straight lines, no freestyle. I've had a look at all the walking feet, they seem to come in different sizes... does size matter? Is there anything else i need to think about?

I managed to break my WF, or rather, started breaking needles constantly only sorted when I got a new WF.
Maybe you need a specialist quilting forum? QW looks good.

Sorry, I meant QB, this one.

As Brother do several walking feet you need to make sure you get the right one, look at the Brother website this page has the info you need.

Not sure if the generic ones will fit a brother machine? I have Janomes.

It looks like your machine has quite a small throat space so bear in mind you will have to roll up the quilt to pass it through so I wouldn't be attempting a King size if I were you! Smile

I have a small Janome & can't really quilt anything bigger than a single bed size quilt.

Thanks for the advice... I'm using blocks made from an old vintage lace sheet and I don't have masses so I don't think it's going to be much more than a lap quilt/throw type.

I will check out the quilting forum too.... I didn't realise it wasn't a simple choice! Grin

I have a brother machine now and use the walking foot from my old Janome machine. If you are in London the Wimbledon Sewing Centre in Tooting is brilliant, lots of advice and very knowledgeable.

Using that link mothership provided the bottom foot on that page seems like the one I was thinking of.... The little video on the link really helps too, thanks so much Mothership!

Oh goody.... I might have to pick your brains more than once Grin

I've uploaded a couple of pictures of my quilt. It's very much a work in progress. I'm not following a pattern because I started with a vintage sheet so I was led by that really. It's a little uneven but I'll trim it to fit properly when I piece it all together. I've got some beautiful brilliant turquoise satin which I'm going to put at the corner of each block too.

Had a look at your pics, it looks lovely.

If you are going to mix fabric you will need to think about how they need washing, what king of laundering will your satin need? Is it likely to shrink? Can you iron it? The other thing to check is colour fastness, especially with batiks - I learned this lesson the hard way! It's always a good idea to pre-wash fabric.

Here's a link to my Pinterest board I post my sewing projects on...

HeadFairy · 24/06/2013 17:34

Thanks! Your board is fab, I'm in awe. I'm a complete novice!

I have pre washed all the fabrics bar the satin... I might just say to my mum she can't wash it :o

I can iron all the other fabrics because I must have ironed those seams flat a dozen times and so far no problems. It's all 100% cotton apart from the satin so no worries there. I could just leave the satin out, it's not essential, but I like the idea of different textures. And it is the most amazingly bright and gorgeous colour.

I've been thinking about the quilting... I've got a whole day set aside when I have no childcare issues next month for me to quilt it... I was going to be play it very safe and stitch in the ditch around the blocks and possibly do some tramlines around the border. My biggest problem is that I get interrupted every 5 minutes if I do it with the kids around, so it's really hard to get much done. Currently I'm making the blocks one at a time in the evenings.

I feel humbled, Mothership.

Why are HF's MN photos so big when most people's are so little? Confused

HeadFairy · 24/06/2013 20:58

lljkk Cos I got special privileges :o Wink

(when you're uploading photos, after you've selected which file you're uploading, you get a page telling you the size. There's a little box with a 3 digit number, change that number to a larger one - mine all uploaded at 150, I changed it to 300. Then store and it'll save your picture larger)

Thanks! I made my first quilt before the DC, then got nothing done for about 5 years, it goes in fits and starts but now my DC are older it's a lot easier. The other big difference is that since we've converted the loft I have our tiny box room as my sewing room so I can leave my sewing machine out.

Thanks for the picture tips, I've learnt something there!
