My mum wants to start scrap booking and is thinking of getting a digital camera...has anyone bought one recently? Any recommendations for one under £200?

Thank you!

I am looking at getting the Samsung A7, its on offer at the moment in Argos (I think) for £130.

Pixiefish · 27/05/2006 20:47

I had a Samsung 7mp camera until recently and thought it was fab. Have got a Canon SLR now(sorry that was over £200 though BUT Canon have some fab camera's under £200)

GeorginaA · 27/05/2006 20:52

The Canon A620 comes in at under £200 and is a fab little camera.

It's an excellent point and shoot but has lots of other features (including full manual mode) as well for when you feel up to branching out.

Also lots of different "scene modes" (landscape, portrait, night portrait, kids & pets etc) for when you want to be more creative but don't really want to have to know what aperture and shutter does.

The macro function is excellent for a compact camera too.

Oh, and it packs 7.1MP and Canon lenses in general are very well thought of.

Can you tell I'm a fan? Grin

Another vote for Canon, great build quality and I think you could get an Ixus or Powershot for under £200

GeorginaA · 27/05/2006 20:57

Yes you can docket - the A620 is part of the powershot range :) Ixus tend to be more expensive for the features they contain simply because you pay extra for their compactness, but again are excellent cameras and you should still be able to find one under £200.

When you decide which one you are going to get, check out the prices on kelkoo.co.uk

SoupDragon · 27/05/2006 21:00

Our Ixus is fab - only 3mp IIRC as it's 3 years old now but takes superb pictures.

GeorginaA · 27/05/2006 21:02

Good point, kid!

Also, not so well known is that Jessops will often pricematch. So best tactic is to use kelkoo/dealtime/pricerunner to find the cheapest you can online, then walk into Jessops with the printout and attempt a little haggling.

That way you get to feel the camera in real life and check it suits you. With the added bonus that you have a "proper" shop you can go to in person in the unlikely event you have problems with it somewhere down the line.

I have just bought the Olympus SP-700 from Jessops half price at 199.00. I have a canon sureshot (35mm) which has excellent picture quality but is obviously not digital. I also have a digital Fuji, only 1.5 mp, and a pracktika 6.0mp, the Fuji takes the better pic because of the Lens. So IMHO forget the pixels and go for a good lens. I borrowed a Canon & an Olympus before I decided but I think Olympus do the better lens. HTH.

UCM · 30/05/2006 17:44

Sorry I lied Fuji do the best lens but not at under 200.

I have just bought a new digital camera this week and have boguth another canon Ixus. My new one was more than £200 but there are some at £200. We went to 3 different shops and they all recommended Canon. I have to say that I would go for Canon now having had them before. Quality of the actual camera is excellent. Our last one was 4.5 years old and still going stronng - only updated it through my whim. LOL!

Don't worry too much about getting the highest megapixels. We went for 6.0 in the end. For same price could have got higher (7 and 8) with other makes, but the quality wasn't as good.

UCM · 30/05/2006 21:34

I should have said that if I wasn't going for a digtal camera I would have bought another canon, but for digi, would chooose Olympus again & again

UCM · 30/05/2006 21:37

Arrrgh, I almost feel like sending you the 1.5m fuji and the 6.0 pracktica just to prove that size isn't everything - lens lens lens, canon haven't got their lens quite right yet. Well in my humble opionion anyway and if you want to see how perfect my pics are, ask away because I have picture trail.

bramblina · 30/05/2006 21:50

I've decided to buy a canon and have checked out their websit, but can anyone tell me a short version of the difference between the ixus and sureshot? I would ideally like to spend £100-£150 so I'm probably going to go for whatever falls in to that bracket, not fussy, just need a decent one for this years holiday. The canon website had too much tech stuff for me and got me all confused!

rbj949703 · 06/06/2006 22:31

This is mine, it's smaller than my mobile phone and takes great pics.

DH thought I was mad for wanting this one, and even madder for wanting a pink one. But, he has had to eat his words, it's every bit as good as his camera.

louismummy · 06/06/2006 22:50

take a peek at what camera in wh smith , make sure you buy it off the internet though you'll save loads. i fancy a new compact so will be doing this shortly. make sure you get one that has a quick start up time, so the baby hasn't moved by the time its taken the shot!

bubblerock · 06/06/2006 23:02

I've got \link{http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00008R9NW/202-3453199-3499060\a canon powershot A70} It's pretty old now but I can't fault it, the pictures are great, I like the style - with the chunky bit to hold on to, it's really easy to use, it has sound on the video too (quite a few don't) I haven't used half of the features but I would definately recommend it or similar.

I upgraded my memory card from \link{http://www.mymemory.co.uk/\mymemory.co.uk} as they were the cheapest at the time, it's only 128mb but is plenty for me. Grin
