they are different techniques but look the same, so you can use whichever you prefer

ssp is slip, slip, purl.

I love the way Knitting Help shows different techniques for decreasing, and even has vides too!

Videos show different versions of ssp.
Some slip knit wise some purl wise.

You might have to play around and see which you prefer - it won't any real difference to what you are doing, they might just look slightly different.
When I ssk, I always slip the first stich knit-wise but do the second one knit-wise or purl-wise depending on which looks neater. Wierdly, it seems to vary according to what yarn/needles I'm using!

I wouldn't know which is neater for which pattern etc.
