Knitting in the round

On circular needles.
Apparently you don't need to purl to get stocking stitch, you just knit. But what if I want to knit a rib? Do I do the same as on single pointed needles?
Confused! Again! :)

TIA.

on circular needles you are knitting a tube rather than a flat piece, so you don't need to purl to get stocking stitch as you just keep knitting round and round

likewise with ribbing, it will make a ribbed tube rather than a flat piece, and you just keep going round. so you k2 p2 (or whatever) until you get to the end of the round, then continue with k2 p2 on the next round

Not quite, you knit the knit stitches and purl the purl stitches (if you knit flat you do the opposite on the wrong side, so purl the ones you knitted and vice versa). Do it for a couple of rounds and you'll see, much easier than trying to get your head round it in writing!

What little says.

And if you want garter stitch you have to knit one round and purl the next.

Right, I'll just try it.
All this kitting in the round stuff makes my head spin. :)

I knew this would be you Grin

Go for it. If you have done rib flat then it will be easy in the round, as you are still purling the ones that look like purls, knitting the ones that look like knits, just like ribbing worked flat.

as little says it's easier to see in real life - just go for it, and if you get in a muddle you can just rip it out and start again!

Thank you
I've just started a silk bookmark with a lace pattern. Then I will try knitting leg warmers, dare I say it, in the round :)

Ugh I tried last week with DPNS and a circular pair of needles. Both almost got lobbed out of the window! I was only knitting with a small number of stitches but really couldn't get to grips with it so Purly you are doing better than me!

Sorry I have nc'd.

There's a great knitted dalek pattern once you get the hang ok rib etc. I learned to knit bobbles on the pattern.

hmm, I have a half finished dalek somewhere...

dalek
