What fabric to use for ...

... A toile? And where could I get it from? I'm doing a dress making workshop soon and we are making toiles so we can learn about adjusting patterns, but I'd like the end result to be wearable if it goes okay. There isn't a great choice of fabric shops here, we have JL, a posh one with nothing even remotely in my price range, cath kidson, hobby craft (which doesn't have much) and a Dunelm (which I've never been too so not sure if they do dressmaking fabrics or not). Or there is the internets. What would you recomend?

I have known people to use old duvet covers or sheets for toiles and end up wearing them.

It's a skirt ether a line or circle. I know I could get a duvet cover, but that means finding one and I don't really have time to trawl charity shops. It will be made out of cotton eventually.

You could make the toile out of a plain cotton and then dye it in the washing machine after you've made it?

Even better - wash the fabric before you make the toile, then any shrinkage is taken care of before you later dye it...

Personally I'd buy a nice coloured sheet or duvet cover in ASDA, slain buries or similar. Good poly coton sheeting will make a nice light holiday skirt.

They are traditionally made from calico.
