Wow - both of those are amazing!! I taught myself to crochet last year, and I haven't done anything anywhere near as impressive as that!!

KirstyoffEastenders · 23/04/2013 13:01

I just taught myself last week and have been to the wool shop today for some supplies. You have given me something to aim for. How did you learn to follow a pattern. I've been using YouTube for the basics but our Internet is very slow.

That little fella was mostly done in double crochet..so pretty easy once you've mastered the basic stitchs. Each body part is worked in a continuous spiral from the bottom to the top. This method is called amigurumi. Stitches the same you just start with a 'magic circle' which I found the trickiest bit to master.

Personally I used knit and crochet magazine to learn. It happened to have an amigurumi special in it the month I bought it which is how come I got hooked into these cute little critters. At the back of every issue there is a picture tutorial to most of the stitches. The patterns are also pretty well explained to get the hang of using a pattern and i could flick to the picture tutorials where i needed to. On the odd occassion backed up with a bit of youtube.

The pieces are usually small enough to work and see progress quickly. The mushroom on my profile was the first. Be aware of cute little kitties or pigs and stuff which have loads of fiddly little bits to start.

I should also say that when doing amigurumi you must use a stitch marker or you won't know where each new row begins. Personally I just use a piece of embroidery thread looped into the first stitch of the row which I move when I get to the next row.

Ooh, well done!

I tried to teach myself to crochet over Easter weekend but haven't had a chance to look at it since. I'm not very good at learning by myself and need to find a group or someone patient to show me how to it.

EdwiniasRevenge · 24/04/2013 01:44

I have another one up now. I am not quite as happy with the finish on this one. But still pleased overall.

Well done ! It is so addictive Grin
I taught myself how to crochet and knit using books and you tube.
Once you can do the basic stitches and learn to read patterns, anything goes.
I love knitting more!
And the wool - I can spend hours in the yarn section .... Drooling at the colours and textures!

Longdistance · 24/04/2013 01:54

Aww, they're cute. You've done well to teach yourself.

I can knit too, and find it very therapeutic.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 24/04/2013 02:02

ooooh, let me then RUTHLESSLY hype my friend Kat Goldin's book, Crochet At Play on here because i think it looks Right Up Your Street. She's an amazing woman, seriously... three kids, oldest just started primary school, and somehow she's managed to start two businesses and write this truly lovely book. i kind of loathe her. Grin

drfayray · 24/04/2013 03:17

When I was going through the painful times of ex leaving me and the children, I knitted my rageGrin
Made beautiful scarves for the wonderful friends who helped me.

Also crocheted a granny square blanket when I was stressed during my PhD.

I find this sort of thing meditative. Plus one is also creating something unique.

MrsMangoBiscuit · 24/04/2013 03:43

Those are fantastic! I clearly watch too much children's TV, I recognised Stitch instantly. Grin

EdwiniasRevenge · 24/04/2013 08:24

I'm recovering from a nervous breakdown. Its my therapy.

I hope to have pics of the next one up tonight which should be recognised instantly.

They are all birthday pressies. I have till next friday to finish #3 and startband finish #4...wibble. I am getting quicker though.

Lovely!
Am also addicted to crochet... Find it really relaxing in the evenings and realise I've missed the plot completely of a tv programme...
Try out the Ravelry website as well it's got thousands of patterns and ideas! Some are a bit rubbish but there are also some real gems in there as well...

EdwiniasRevenge · 24/04/2013 08:44

The stitch was from ravelry.

Well I found it by google but had to sign up to Ravelery to get it.

Edwinias - I am on the long recovery from depression, and the knitting I do - and especially the knitting group I go to - are my best form of therapy too. The high point of last week for me was making knitted and crocheted sandwiches for a craft project that another knitting group is involved in. I have a huge backlog of big projects, and am knitting a tunic for me at the moment, but smaller projects are good because they are finished more quickly, and I get that buzz from completing something.

EdwiniasRevenge · 04/05/2013 16:19

My latest 2 projects are now up.

I now have lots more requests...
